Season  2 Episode 19
Star Trek The Animated Series

A mysterious energy cloud infects the USS Enterprises (NCC 1701) computer in Star Treks TAS "Practical Joker." On a routine survey mission the Enterprise is out flanked and out gunned by three Romulan Star battle cruisers. Fortunately, scotty's shields hold out. Kirk's chat with the Romulan Commander tells us any invasion of Romulan territory is punishable by death. Captain Kirk denies the charges tucks tail and runs for cover in a nearby gas cloud.

Amazingly the strategy works and with the Romulans gone, crew members begin to relax until...

Strange things start happening. Leaky glasses, faulty food synthesizers, laughing gas, Spocks black eyes and ice covered decks! All caused by a sentient intelligence absorbed into the ships circuitry. Instead of being alone and terrified, its gas hearing the "entity" amusing itself at the crews expense... laughter echoing throughout the ship.

Who said "We should be in tip top shape in another 24 hours, no thanks to those Romulan Vultures!"

The Enterprise is suffering from electronic nervous breakdown and its far from over with the Romulans. Romulans are a stubborn proud race. These guys don't just give up. They attack, its what they do. Apparently another sleigh ride into the gaseous cloud is on the cards.

Once inside the nebula, will the Romulan battlecruiser catch up with the Enterprise? How do you outfox a sentient computer playing practical jokes on you? Can you tell who voices the "sentient entity" from listening to the video clip?

Scotty said it! And the voice is the ship's computer. (Which was voiced by Barrett I believe.)

Didn't they make an episode like that in the first series on TV

These animated eps are so trippy.

In this episode the Romulans remind me of wolves hunting in packs. It hardly a fair fight with three Romulan Star Empire Battle cruisers pitted against one federation starship.

I agree that it's not a fair fight with Romulan Star Empire Battle cruisers but at least the ship got some laughs. Fun episode and review up on Friday! Thanks for a great review, and I'm wishing you a gr8 evening Man.

It does sound like fun. Something there should be more of. Much more.

Nothing like a good ol' fashioned practical joke. Only sometimes the joke can go to far. Then it's not funny any more, it's just mean.
But the joke on Spock was the best. Knowing Spock he didn't wash it off till his shift was done.

I wish this had been an episode on the original STrek. AND I wish I could have seen the entire animated episode.

What a fun premise for an episode. Also, I wish I had a sentient computer that played practical jokes on my enemies.
