Star Trek TAS - Bug Eyed Monster - BEM

Stardate 7403.6
Writer: David Gerrold
Airdate: 14th September, 1974
Season 2 Episode 18

In Star Trek TAS "BEM" Captain James "Tiberius" Kirk and Mr Spock are captured by "bug eyed monsters." How could this happen? A diplomatic away mission to Delta Theta III goes haywire when cultural observer - Commander ARI BEM sticks his beak in. Our green skinned friend is an important guest aboard the USS Enterprise NCC 1701 who sabotages Captain Kirks plans.

In a bid to secure intergalactic and scientific ties, Kirk's landing party beams down. We soon learn ARI BEM has hidden talents. Separating into "parts" allows him to switch Kirk's and Spock's phasers and communicators with fakes!

Don't you think thats weird? Cos' whoa - I sure did. BEM's little magic trick doesn't even qualify as a bona fide "Deus ex machina." Instead of helping Captain Kirk and Mr Spock, the daft beggar tricks them, "Observing" LOL. The plot thickens when BEM leads Captain Kirk and Spock into a trap.

For a while its looking dicey with our heros trapped inside cages, while the native reptilians wait for orders. BEM is a total wild card. The fun begins when a sentient intelligence, Earth Mother speaks! Meanwhile BEM is on the loose, "Observing." The message is clear - Do not interfere with my children below, now scram.

Does this episode remind you a little of Star Trek TNG Justice? What do you think happened in the end? Leave BEM behind or incur the Wrath of Earth Mother?

Mother Earth triumphs. Even more often than Captain Kirk and his pointy-eared friend. Which is right and proper.

Kirk definitely made the right call. Any god with Uhura's sexy voice would be difficult to argue with anyway.

I'm going with Mother Earth, too ... using the old adage of don't mess with a scorned woman (or something like that.)

That was so weird how he could separate. They got to do so much with the cartoon that they couldn't with the live show.

Cultural Observer BEM would have made a pretty good pickpocket!

OK this is one weird episode that I don't remember at all. Hoe David Copperfield of this alien to separate in 3 parts..kinda weird

Well, Tiberius, with a middle name like that, maybe you WOULD have made a good librarian! :D

Mother Earth always trumps everyone.

Sounds like a crazy episode. Definitely something they couldn't have done without animation

Wow, this is quite the blog you have going on here. That body separating in 3 parts in very interesting. What did that signify exactly? Main stream earthling have a lot to learn in the journey.

I gotta say Bem is the freakiest alien they've ever had. Seeing his body parts floating around was creepy. I'll have a review tomorrow but it's an interesting one.

I hate when an alien disembodies itself and exchanges my phaser for a fake one. Happens to me almost every Friday night.
