Airdate: March 21, 1988
 Stardate: 41503.7
Writers: Dorothy Fontana, Maurce Hurley, Herbert Wright.
 Season 1 episode 19
 Director: Rob Bowman

A battle in the Neutral Zone. This being Star Trek we rely on Picard's rationality making sense. Unlike fantasy, this is cutting science fiction, on the edge of the Neutral Zone so Starfleet wants answers fast, why I hear you cry? because Klingon criminals are on the loose... duh what in blazes?  Yeah, so now the Federations flagship Enterprise-D launches an investigation...

USS ENTERPRISE NCC 1701-D

The eerie thrilling music plays in the background. Scanning... Short-range scans reveal no indications of life-signs. Data identifies the mystery cargo vessel as the USS Batress. Now Worf speaks up, so now there are life-signs! The plot thickens!

USS BATRESS

Hmmm all in not what it seems until we see.... a severely damaged Talarian ship drifting amid space in the Neutral Zone. Theres a mystery unraveling here and Captain Picard's USS Enterprise NCC 1701-D away team is soon beaming over....

PICARD

PICARD: "Everything about this seems wrong."

RIKER: "agreed"

GEORDI, RIKER

So what do Riker, Data and La Forge find?

DATA, GEORDI, RIKER

Its time for La Forge to activate his Visual Acuity transmitter attached to his visor which lets us see what Geordi sees, (lets face it, this gadget is a gimic) Once onboard the away team discover three Klingons  and bring them back to the Enterprise-D sickbay.

GEORDI'S VISUAL ACUITY TRANSMISSION

FIRST APPEARANCE OF KLINGONS ON TNG BESIDES WORF!

WARNING THE DEAD A KLINGON
WARRIOR IS ABOUT TO ARRIVE
It turns out the trio arent who they claim to be. They say they were attacked by Ferengi. Curiously Worf's position on the Enterprise-D interests them. I have to admit, when I heard Worf letting loose with a powerful howl, joining his Klingon warrior buddies in the death ritual, when one of them dies of his injuries. (I thought they sounded like wild beasts)
RIKER, GEORDI, KLINGONS, DATA

Eventually, Worf discovers these Klingons are opposed to the Federation and the Klingon truce. The simple truth is these guys are in fact renegades, on the run from Klingons warriors sent to put them in irons! Already a Klingon Cruiser has been destroyed by the criminals so now its crunch time.

KLINGON BIRD OF PREY

When another warship arrives, Picard has to turn them over, its that simple. Right? Wrong, its not that simple. The renegades are running loose on the Enterprise-D. Meanwhile, its time for Worf to make up his mind. Who side does he want to be on? Federation or Klingon?

These Klingons are criminals but with Worfs help they are captured.... but hey this is the 24th century! We've got high tech Klingon gadgets! One escapes, One dies in sickbay and the other finds Main Engineering.

KORRIS MEANS BUSINESS
SO DOES WORF!

While holding the Enterprise to ransom with his 007 Klingon gadget, Korris holds all cards, so Worf has to talk him down. Desperate Korris wants freedom. He  points his energy weapon at the intermix dilithium crystal chamber of the Enterprise-D. Does worf back down?

JOIN US WORF WHEN YOUR TOUR OF DUTY IS OVER.

QUESTION : What did Klingon Korris expect from Worf and Captain Picard?

WAS IT.........

A: SPEAK WITH WORF ABOUT BATTLE AND GLORY

B: COMMAND OF THE ENTERPRISE-D BATTLEBRIDGE TO ROAM THE GALAXY

C: SEPERATE FROM THE SHIP AND FREEDOM TO LIGHT UP THE GALAXY

D: ALL OF THE ABOVE

LIVE LONG AND PROSPER!

Tough place for Worf. But even if he was on a Klingon ship and part of her crew, he'd still have to take those guys down.

It was a tough call for Worf learning his Klingon brothers were renegades, worse still their Korris' intention to blow up the Enterprise-D unless he secured his freedom.

Those were the early costumes, the one piece suits. I heard the actors say how uncomfortable they were. I like the later look, too.

I believe some Star Trek actors had trouble breathing and back problems owing to restricted nature of the familiar jumpsuits. In season three costume designer Robert Blackman converted them into two piece uniforms with "Eisenhower-esque mandarin collars" Liz

I love your editorial comments. lol

Thanks Donna, Klingons always give you bang for buck in any Star Trek series. In this episode - Heart of Glory, Korris pointed his gun at the Enterprise-D extremely powerful warpcore.

Watching this episode again I'm surprised Captain Picard didn't give the order to evacuate the crew into the saucer-section and separate the ship.

Can't ever trust the ones that get found.

Its true Pat. These Klingons were on the run from the law and took a Talarian freighter so far out in the Neutral Zone. Their luck ran out when a Klingon Cruiser tracked them down but got destroyed trying to apprehend them.

This was definitely one of the highlights of an otherwise choppy first season.

The gun and special effects definitely added to the Klingon drama, despite their capture at least they went out fighting.
