Starship Dangers In Space

Star Trek's TNG "Disaster" episode stardate 45156.1 marked an alarming encounter with a formidable celestial object for Captain Picards crew aboard the U.S.S Enterprise which reduced the ship to a defective, terminal hulk in galactic space. Two dangerous quantum filaments slammed into the Enterprise rendering many of the ship systems and the main computer inoperable.

The federation starship was now crippled and faced a crises situation. Counsellor Deanna Troi, Senior Starfleet Officer on bridge duty implemented Emergency Alpha 2 protocol thus disengaging all shipboard computer control and placing the ship systems on manual overdrive.

So what are the consequences of dangerous space travel with the Enterprise's-D communications, engineering interfaces, weapons and defence, main viewing screen, main computer, navigation, sensor arrays, food replicators, turbo lifts, all internal doors, environmental controls, transporter machinery, auxiliary systems, outer hatch doors and escape pods offline?

Communications frequencies are vital for every starship, without the ability to send and receive through subspace, the Enterprise is cut off from the rest of the federation nor can it send out a mayday asking for help. Worf's Weapons and Defence Systems are crucial for launching a counter attack against a hostile force intent on taking over the ship.

The main viewing screen allows the bridge staff to navigate the ship safely and alerts the crew to any space perils not accounted for by the Enterprise's computer. Sensor arrays, science stations, environmental controls, turbo lifts, food replicators, navigation systems, internal doors all tie in with the main computer core.

Starship interplanetary travel is often fraught with hazards so ships like the Enterprise NCC 1701-D are often armed to the teeth to protect themselves against dangerous natural phenomena and aggressive alien races. The main deflector and shields are an impressive field of science developed as a first line of defense for ship and crew.

Unfortunately quantum filaments which has subatomic properties, hundreds of meters long with almost no mass can penetrate the shields. Starfleet Officers gave their lives in the course of their duty and many other crew members were injured on stardate 45156.1 The bridge staff realized that once the antimatter containment field reached 14%, critical failure was on the way with a countdown of two hours for the Enterprise.

Hull ruptures are unnerving because this compromises the health and safety of the crew. Leaking air causes a loss of cabin pressure, loss of heat, loss of oxygen and with a compromised hull and no forcefield to keep out the vacuum of space, the Enterprise's structural integrity is at stake. Without air, trapped starfleet crew members will suffer from boiling blood, radiation poisoning, loss of consciousness and asphyxiation.

Temperatures aboard the ship depends on many things. Its location in space, condition of ship systems e.g. environmental control and the shields. The shields are all that stand between the life of the crew and the inhospitable void of space. Theoretically , if Captain Picard's crippled U.S.S. Enterprise is stranded too close to a star, the heat will boil up the crew and snuff them out. On the other hand stranded in the dark depts of space with no sunlight will just turn their ship into a freezing titanium nightmare.

Another challenge for the hampered Enterprise crew involves food replicators and the need for water. Theoretically lets imagine the crew have patched the hull and environmental control has been restored. However the food replicators are still offline and the galley is burnt out.
Environmental Controls
Space is a very dry place. Planets like Mercury which is nearest to earth's sun is too hot for water, so the Enterprise is dependant on its technology and ships stores. Until the starship can navigate herself to the nearest starbase or raise help from one of the nearest United Federation of Planets she remains a frustrated hulk in galactic space.

Under normal circumstances the Enterprise-D can extinguish fires herself by creating a vacuum and eliminating all oxygen from the fires place of origin. However for an incapacitated Federation Galaxy Class Flagship this is highly unlikely. Uncontrolled fires are extremely life threatening aboard any kind of space vessel and its surprising how fast smoke can spread throughout a starship if swift action, forcefields and emergency procedures are not acted upon.

Starfleet Officers are highly trained professionals with one weakness in common. Emotionalism. Except for Mr Spock and his home world of computer loving, minded vulcans of course. One of the greatest Klingon villains of all time, Commander Kruge has described earthlings as "human weaklings" a reputation earth's ball of beings have earned owing to our kind endeavours in space and emotional nature.

Still even spacewalks make Mr Worf our hero klingon (in Star Trek's First Contact,) sick to his stomach. Spacewalks are often necessary to carry out repairs and in the construction of starships. Intergalactic space really is an exciting and scary place.

Asteroids from the Deep Dark.

Duncan Steel, Vice President of Spaceguard has acknowledged that based on recent evidence the chances of an asteroid doing catastrophic damage in the next century are 1 in 5000 but theres no need to panic. Do earthlings live in a happy state of asteroid oblivion? Find out with Mr Steel.
BBC Asteroid Experts This website will get you amped! Its full of games and quizzes also. Check it out!

(Read my Post on the Vega Star System)

Seemingly, Earth has no international plan yet and governments are sadly lacking in this area. Asteroids are rocks and metal and comets are dirty snowballs which evaporate once they enter the earths atmosphere. Diverting an asteroid on a possible collision course would involve nuclear weapons to nudge it away from the planet gently. A global asteroid space search programme is required like yesterday.. Its possible to see asteroids from the day side of earth using telescopes in space

Funding doesn't exist to carry out ground based, telescope research, which is cheaper than space based telescopes. Spaced based are better because your can search with high technology, 24/7.

NASA's space "Spitzer Telescope" has an infrared multi-band imaging photometer, excellent for locating even the faintest sources of heat at long distances. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory(JPL), Pasadena, California manages Spitzer for NASA's - Science Directorate in Washington. This kind of telescope is ideal for discovering and identifying celestial bodies. The Hubble Space Telescope is another which has found 600 stars adrift in space between the Virgo Cluster galaxies. The vast majority of asteroid discoveries are made using telescopes which belong to the US Air Force.

Livescience.com's author Tariq Malik mentions a high ranking Federal Space Agency Official as having told reporters that Russia would step up to save the planet, but that the effort had to be an international endeavor. Theres an interesting link within Tariq Malik's article that leads to Space.com

The International Community involving Prague Astronomers, The International Astronomical Union, Nasa'a Space Guard, New IAU Task Force, U.S. Congress, and the National institute of Astrophysics are striving towards monitoring asteroids more closely and ultimately creating an early warning system. Warned in advance, the Earth can send up a rocket and deflect any intruder. Thats the theory. The demand for astronomers now is going to be greater than ever!

The largest Earth approaching asteroid is the EROS. It's 20 miles across. Nasa landed a spacecraft on it. It cannot hit Earth. Asteroids crossing the path of the Earths orbit do occur, the largest of which was 5 miles across. Asteroids orbit the sun, sometimes falling out of orbit and coming close to one of the planets. It takes time to plot the trajectory of an asteroid.

The largest group of asteroids is located between Mars and Jupiter numbering in their thousands. Astronomers call it the Asteroid Belt. Another group called the Apollos, orbits between Earth and Mars. One asteroid, Ida, has a satellite. The best place to look for asteroids is directly overhead at night, opposite the sun. We need more larger telescopes to scan the night skies, especially if we are to spot the smaller asteroids.

Its a small world in a big universe with the moon and the sun shielding earth. We've been lucky so far.... The flagship of the Federation won't be coming to our rescue when the big one hits our harmless little world. Instead, earthlings will be eating cookies and watching Star Trek on tv.

World of Science And Fiction

Greetings! curious and eager fans of Science Fiction. Welcome to Star Trek Sci Fi Blog. Escape with me to my world of science and fiction. What does Science Fiction mean in our lives? Star Trek has a positive influence in peoples lives, It explores a hopeful future, as opposed to gloom and doom, and general mayhem. Its story arcs do have their fair share of shape shifters and con artists, murderers and madmen, powerful beings, a giant lizard and tribble critters.

I have always treasured the "science" and detail in the fiction of Star trek. While I realise this is tv entertainment, alot happens in space. Astronauts work in space carrying out scientific research, satellites and the International Space station require maintenance. Space exploration probes are launched from earth into the uncharted parameters of the universe to visit other planets which help scientists make new discoveries.

Along the way space data and images are transmitted back to earth. Interstellar space bodies, expanding stars and collapsing stars, merging galaxies, timetravel etc are all related cosmic components of science. Lets not forget the technology used to observe the cosmos, like the U.S.S. Enterprise in Star Trek (hehe) and NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California.

Star Trek and Cosmology will motivate man today and far into the future. Scotty, Geordi, O'Brien, B'Elanna and Trip are always busy in engineering. Its a known fact, Star Trek fans inspired to become engineers and scientists have studied up on their technical journals just like their heroes Mr Spock and Scotty of course!

In The Paradise Syndrome in Star Trek TOS, Stardate 4842.6 the USS Enterprise NCC 1701 managed to hold off an approaching asteroid threatening a planet long enough for them to fix the technology on the planet and save the day. Kirk is found by local natives suffering from amnesia who believe hes their God, Kirok. Wouldn't it be great if Earth had a deflector oblelisk to steer trouble away from our little world? As it turns out Kirok weds the beautiful Miramanee native with Spock returning having deciphered how the malfunctioning deflector works. Good old Spocky restores Kirks mind but the sad news is Miramanee dies from the stoning when things turned ugly with the upset villagers on the Preservers planet below. Star Trek has touched on these exhilarating wonders of the universe in a positive, unified and remarkable fashion.

The technology used is awe inspiring. Just look at that mighty federation starship, the USS Enterprise returning to spacedock. The second of her kind to bear the name USS Enterprise NCC 1701. Well armed and fast, the first Enterprise is famous and was launched in 2245 from the San Francisco yards orbiting Earth. She was commanded by Captain Robert April and then Christopher Pike. This starship achieved legendary heights under the stewardship of Captain James Tiberius Kirk during its five year mission which lasted for three seasons. Gene Roddenberry's classic Star Trek gave us 79 voyages of unique cosmic science fiction, going boldly with fun, imagination with aliens in the depts of space. Imagine being a passenger looking out and wondering, whats going to happen next. Will we fall out of the sky or hit the spacedock? Will my Romulan Ale spill? On the other hand you could be quite relaxed and looking forward to meeting your relatives or friends.

The crew are probably excited about shoreleave, Scott's happy to let the starfleet core of engineers takeover and retune the engines leaving him in peace to study his technical manuals. Kirks getting ready to become one with a rock. Uhura is meeting secretly with Mr Spock! Naughty little devils! Hunger and starvation are no more. People seek to better themselves through education and not by the Ferengi way. The accumulation of wealth. To quote the Ferengi's First Rule of Acquisition. "Once you have their money, you never give it back"!

Thanks for reading this far and keep on Star Trekking!

One Giant Leap for Hamkind.

Girls are Geeks too and heres the proof! Its sound hilarious but in 1961 NASA launched a successful astronaut 150 miles into the heavens and he was a monkey! Apparently Ham was smart enough to test out the original Mecury craft launched into earth's sub orbital atmosphere helping us humans discover whether living creatures could survive the rigours of interstellar flight. LOL, okay so I'm exaggerating a little bit but Ham was congratulated by NASA after his successful flight on January 31st 1961.

Two years later thirteen female pilots sign up for Astronaut training with high hopes of entering NASA's Mecury Program. The female geeks are put through NASA's hoops and pass the same demanding physical, intellectual and psychological tests as Mecury's seven male astronauts and trailblazer Ham. The kicker for the Mecury 13 is the year, 1963. Gender discrimination probably prevented female acceptance into NASA's space flight program but who knows why America just wasn't really ready?

How times have changed! On 18th June 1983 Sally Ride became the first American woman to enter space except Russia's was way ahead of us at warp factor 9. Isn't it interesting Mother Russia had enough faith in their girl geeks to become the first country launching the first woman into space with Valentina Tereshkova in 1963!

WILL STAR TREK REBOOT DEEP SPACE 9?

Today we have a Star Trek fan taking the reigns at Star Trek Sci Fi Blog! Welcome aboard Adam Joseph from the USS Sports Machine. Adam writes articles and publishes sports stories and now Adams words in science fiction will be energizing our thoughts. Take it away trekker :)

Star Trek is a cult classic that has turned from what once was a small show into a lifestyle for many sci-fi fans. In the 80s and 90s, Star Trek was once again broadcast into the homes of millions with the installment of episodes titled The Next Generation. The series boldly explored "where no-one has gone before" aboard the newly commissioned USS Enterprise NCC 1701-D. Only years after the massive success of Star Trek Next Generation, producers decided to create another series, Deep Space Nine. This series was set upon a space station so as to not conflict with The Next Generation's 176 starship adventures.

Deep Space Nine was vastly underrated by many in the 90s but became much more popular as the years went on. Critics now praise the show for in-depth character building and brilliant stories.  This has created a deep fanbase that has continued on until our modern day. With many new novels coming out every year, there is a very strong group of individuals in the Star Trek community who are looking to learn more about this space station. This makes a reboot seem very feasible and likely for Deep Space 9.

Will Deep Space 9 get a reboot or possibly hit the big screen someday?

Pulsar Star Movie

Following up on my last Pulsar post I felt compelled to share this discovery. Here is an image of an artists creation which shows the interstellar remains of space debris, orbiting around the pulsar called 4u 0142+61. Over 100,000 years ago a massive star blew up giving birth to a baby pulsar. The explosion spewed forth a fallback disk of rocks and space dust captured in the orbit of the reborn pulsar. NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope discovered this space marvel 13,000 light years away in the Northern Constellation Cassiopeia.

In Pulsar Rubble you will find fascinating details about the physics of this enticing space phenomenon, star composition, death and re-birth of planets plus a thrilling little space movie! Why didn't the supernova blast disperse all the planets debris and space dust? find out.

Its an awesome inspirational short movie giving an uptake on the unfolding of a giant star in our universe, beyond imagination. It can take 5 minutes to download in Quicktime player, but it is well worth the wait believe me.

How it works. You can see the short movie animation by clicking on the four thumbprint images within the above link, marked the birth of the "Phoenix Planets." Watch for yourself an electrifying rotating radiant super giant star..... well you didn't expect me to tell you the rest of it, did you?

Enjoy the movie, Live Long and Prosper!

Starship Navigation In Space

Ensign bring us about Bearing 330 mark 15 engage. We've heard Captain Picard giving these orders on the bridge of the Enterprise, but what does it mean? The term "Bearing" is a mathematical expression which Picard gives as part of an instruction to the helm. This alerts the ensign or navigational officer of his intent to change the direction of the Enterprise from its previous heading and redirect the flightpath of the Enterprise towards the direction of the other spaceship, which is most likely visible on the viewscreen.

A bearing measures the angular difference between the current forward direction of the spacecraft (Enterprise in diagram) and the direction being described. (Khan's Botany Bay ship) The first number in a bearing of 000 mark 0 describes the direction, directly ahead of the vessel. The second number in a bearing of 330 mark 15 describes the direction to the port side ( look right) of the larger ship (Enterprise) which is the elevation value of the Enterprise towards Khans Botany Bay vessel, right above the centerline of the ship.

When the mathematical expression "Heading" is given this describes the direction of the Enterprise not in relation to any other ship or object, but to a region of space. A Heading is composed of two numbers representing an azimuth value and an elevation value in degrees. The numbers 000, mark 0 describe the ships direction towards the Geometric Center of the Galaxy. The ships degrees are from 0 to 360 in a clockwise motion and encircle the vessel.

Image Copyrights Belongs To

Stars and planets are also used as a reference guide by starships to identify a location in space or set a new ships flightpath. Federation starship computers can immediately set a ship's course direction in space, based on previously explored and mapped positions of interstellar "space bodies" otherwise known as planets, stars and even asteroid belts.

Verbal navigational mathematical instructions given by Captain Picard to the conn, have advantageously altered the U.S.S. Enterprises NCC 1701-D bearing and elevation in times crisis with enemy ships, thus averting disaster for the entire Enterprise crew.

Starship Navigation In Space

The center of the Galaxy 000, mark 0 is also used as a reference point when calculating the direction of the ships Direction of Flight towards another region of space. In the diagram with the U.S.S Enterprise NCC 1701-D and the U.S.S Yamato NCC 71807 both have an azimuth heading of 030.

Milky Way Quadrants

Seeking out new life on new civilizations is a job for Captain Picard's super fast Galaxy Class Enterprise NCC 1701-D. In our galaxy, the Milkyway is home for earth's happy ball of beings, Vulcans, Cardassians, Vidians, Romulans, Warrior Klingons (tolerant towards weakling humans), and friendly intelligent lifeforms too, all scattered across the stars in the great expanse of space. Diverse Intergalactic aliens live in the Gamma Quadrant, Delta Quadrant, Alpha Quadrant and Beta Quadrant. But who cares, right?

The galaxy is full of intelligent races and murderers, fascinating creatures really except beware! Some races like the flesh diseased Vidians only want to meet you, so they can steal your precious organs. These alien lifeforms will leave you gasping for your last breath of fresh air as darkness descends and closes in on you! Other bloodthirsty villains like Khan Noonian Singh set their sights a little higher and go after bigger fish to fry. Captain James T. Kirk encountered Khan with designs to exact revenge on the starship USS Enterprise NCC 1701 just to settle old scores. Its very cold in the vacuum of space. So don't get mad just get even!

The four quadrants of the Milkyway stretch across 100,000 light years with a center swell or black hole extending 10,000 light years. The Milkyway black hole has been nicknamed "The Monster" by experts studying physical and chemical properties of celestial bodies in the sector. Each quadrant is extremely large.

According to Spock's logical computations and analytical equations, each quadrant is estimated to be eight billion cubic light years, containing hundreds of thousands of sectors. A sector is a primary unit of measurement in charted space, 20 light years across and encompassing 5- 10 star systems.

The close proximity of the stars at the core of the spiral galaxy is dangerous to navigate for any starship. Black holes, dark energy and dark matter exists in the vast expanses of the universe so imagine running into one of those in your intrepid starship. In the reality of Star Trek, such encounters don't pose a great risk for Federation starships. Spacecraft simply navigate around them! HAHA! What about when USS Enterprise NCC 1701-D was thrown across space to Galaxy M33, on the far side of Triangulum.? Yes I did use the word "thrown." An impressive 2.7 million lightyears away from earth but fortunately thanks to the "Travellers" input the Enterprise-D brought everyone back! How extremely fortunate for Picard's ship. The crew escaped the galaxies bountiful pitfalls that should at the very least have trapped or gobbed up the Flagship USS Enterprise NCC 1701-D.

The unknown inspires us to make new discoveries. Its the only way earthlings can truly unlock the supreme mystique surrounding the celestial treasures in space, which is why we must continue with our space programme, develop our technologies, educate ourselves and build a wicked starship!

Asteroid Space Trek

The year is 2364. In the murky darkness of space and time, several shadows flicker directly ahead of Uss Enterprise-D's flightpath. The bridge viewscreen crackles with static. Riker stops short and looks at Worf for answers. The Klingon growls and thumps his Tactical Station in sheer frustration. Captain Picard gets up from his command chair sighing heavily.

The burdens of command and over 1000 enterprise crew are on his mind. Engineering is getting unusual readings from the long range and short range sensors. In fact the eyes of the Enterprise have been completely disabled owing to heavy radiation escaping from a nearby nebula.

"Captain, we're on a direct collision course with several space objects!"  states the android Data rather calmly. Beads of sweat roll down the captains face.
"All hands battle stations, brace for impact." bawls Picard.
"But Captain why don't we just phaser our way through?." suggests Worf.
"No Mr Worf, thats a bad idea." retorts Picard drumming his fingers nervously.
"No-one ever listens to me" mutters worf through gritted teeth.
Red Alert, Shields up. Computer alter course, bearing 270 mark 15."
"Unable to comply."
Deanna shifts uneasily leaning over to face Picard. Her soft olive skin is white with worry. "Hey lover, we need to get out of here now."
Picard throws his hands up in the air. "My quarters?"
Deanna flashes her sexy smile as all hell breaks loose. "Lets go"

Stray asteroids from Jupiters space belt smash into the starboard side of the ship ripping through Transporter Room 2, obliterating everything and everyone on deck 6. The emergency bulkheads and forcefields immediately seal off the affected area.

The plasma injection phase-synchronization software systems crash during the collision causing a massive over load in the warp engines. Chief Engineer La Forge orders an emergency warp core shutdown in an attempt to keep the plasma injectors from seizing up..

The ship shudders and yawns unnaturally, throwing everyone off their feet. Wonderful crunching noises of titanium and pieces of asteroids rip into Shuttle Deck 3 killing all the shuttlebay crewhands. The Enterprise is severely wounded and takes another direct hit on her Engineering hull. .

"Merde....MY SHIP... what in great space is happening down there La Forge. We can't see a damn thing up here."
"I'm on it Captain, just give me two minutes." replies Geordi tapping his com badge.
"We don't have two minutes, I need warp power now." yells the captain staring into his chairs intercom.
"Captain, I've just shut down the warpcore to prevent the plasma injectors reaching meltdown and causing a warpcore breach." reports La Forge above the mayhem in Engineering. Picard glances at a frozen Commander Riker for suggestions. Suddenly the deckplates crumple like tissue paper under Rikers feet..... A terrifying jagged crack splinters across the viewscreen. Its only a matter of time.

Riker is sucked off his feet first, "Data, somethings got me! agghhhhh!'

Panic stricken crew members terrorized out of their minds scream out agonized deaths as flailing bodies shoot across the bridge like cannon balls. Data watches his colleagues zipping through the air, unsettled by their sudden departure.
"Geordi, we've lost structural integrity, divert impulse power to the deflector array now or the entire bridgecrew will die." states the andoid rather calmly.

At the push of a button Geordi re-routes impulse power to the deflector dish but its too little too late. The optical data network crashes momentarily freezing the Enterprises navigation and processing speed times. Engineers grab their tool kits and scramble like mice up the jeffries tubes with orders to redirect every available scrap of energy to the anti photon generators.

STARFLEET NEEDS YOU!

That means you mister, now get going and don't forget your tricorder in case you run into trouble along the way. Reports are coming in with casualties from all over the ship. The Enterprise can't take it anymore and is drifting in space. Shields are down and your tricorder readings clearly identify enemy pirate ships in the vicinity swooping in to loot the Enterprise which is suffering from primary and secondary system failures with malfunctioning phasers. Torpedoes are offline and the use of forcefields have been deployed to suppress fires in the secondary hull.

THE NEEDS OF THE MANY OUTWEIGH THE NEEDS OF THE FEW.

"Attention, this is the Captain. I need hardly remind you that the lives and safety of the Enterprise are at stake. We've been hit by a series asteroids and have temporarily lost power but I know you are the finest crew in Starfleet. Defend the ship and set your phasers on stun. Fight hand to hand combat if necessary. Picard out." A bewildered crew state helplessly at their guns.
It could be just a matter of minutes or seconds before space pirates send their henchmen beaming aboard.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO AND WHY DID PICARD GIVE SUCH AN UNUSUAL ORDER?

Its your Starfleet duty to protect, serve and defend the Enterprise, right!! You've got to take action and not give in to fear. Just don't panic is all I'm saying..... You can do this. The Enterprise needs you.

First, Identify and isolate whatever problem tour faced with. Getting the phaser emitters online would be a good idea. Over 41% of them are fried circuits. To complicate matters, tricorders are giving off strange readings owing to sporadic nebula radiation leaking through the hull. You take out your Enterprise-D Schematic and locate the problem systems illustrated on your backup ipad. Suddenly the klingon Worf appears geared for war. He's carrying his bat'leth with him and its soaked in blood.

"I caught two intruders on deck 15. Remember Ensign, when you need fiber optic cabling to make repairs you can get it from here." roars the klingon as he rips cabling from the ceiling with one hand firing it on the deckplates. But thats Worf for you.

First things first, you must navigate your way to the required system failure using the correct co-ordinates provided. Flipping open your tricorder and taking readings is the easy part. Fixing the damaged Phaser Emitter Element is quite another matter because the entire section C deck is flooded with nebula radiation. You will have to think outside the box. The ship's in grave danger and time is of the essence. Geordi's hasn't given you a moments peace and orders you to go enter section c. No time to suit up, its now or never.. Hey, I know why don't we send Wesley up the crawlway!!!  Sounds like a great idea, doesn't it. Theres 14 system failures to check out!! He'll never make it back alive.

Have you got what it takes to join Starfleet?

U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701

The U.S.S. Enterprise(NCC-1701), like her twelve sister ships* in Starfleet Command is primarily a scientific and research vessel of deep space exploration of the 23rd century. What is the USS Enterprise 1701's primary mission objective?

Why seeking out new life forms on new civilisations, boldly contacting aliens who have discovered the basics governing warp technology key to achieving interstellar warp travel and what will the United Federation of Planets do? They'll send out Kirk's flagship to wellcome the fledglings into the club.

Owner/Creator Paramount Pictures and/or CBS Studios

In over forty years of meeting new lifeforms, the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 has upgraded with at least two refits during her much watched five year missions(2265-2270). Kirk's ship has engaged in scores of first contacts, military conflicts and time-travel. She has defended earth from the Klingons, Romulans, a Planet Killer, and the Alien Space Probe. Under command of Captain James Tiberius Kirk, the Enterprise NCC-1701 was destroyed in 2285 in a bid to outwit Commander Kruge and his klingon bird of prey.

Science Officer Spock is always on the lookout for subspace anomolies, spatial disturbances, hostile energy lifeform readings and with sensors scanning at maximum to locate accurate planetary positions, Spock's analysis is strategic to pinpointing starship dangers in a matter of seconds on the ship's approach to a new star system. The USS Enterprise's Science Station provides Captain Kirk with enough military intelligence to blast potential enemy starships to smithereens but lets not forget Chief Engineer Scotty.

When the USS Enterprise 1701 took a mighty, helluva walloping from Romulan enemy fire, Scottys first on the Captain's case about the structural integrity of the ship and his precious warp engines. "The ship is packing quite a walloping, she can't take much more of this. She'll blow up in four hours." In the eyes of Commander Kruge's Lieutenant Commander, the USS Enterprise 1701 was a formidable "battlecruiser" capable of defeating her enemies but its really Scotty's engineering "Miracle Worker" touch keeping her together. In Star Trek's universe, Kirk's constitution-class starship doubles as the flagship of the United Federation of Planets peace-keeping force and as a military heavy cruiser.

While under way, every Federation starship is completely manned at all times. Aboard the USS Enterprise it's no different. Each watch consists of eight hours of normal duty. When yellow alert sounds, a second watch is activated and during red alert, all watches are called to battle stations even if your'e snoozing soundly in your bunkbed.

Each of the USS Enterprise NCC 1701's 23 decks is equipped to handle its own gravity. When the ship jumps to warp, Anti-acceleration/deceleration inertial dampeners prevent the crew from leaving strawberry stains on the walls from rapid acceleration.

The Enterprise is equipped with shuttlecraft for ship to planet away missions. In crises situations with the ship is under attack or when Captain Kirk is cheating the jaws of death (Doomsday Machine) Trekkies can always rely on the transporter pad malfunctioning. Just when its needed most! Fortunately for Chief Engineer Scotty, the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC - 1701 has two well known shuttlecraft.

During special missions, the "Galileo" and "Columbus" are called into service to transport crew members/ambassadors/v.i.p's and equipment towards planets or starships when the ships transporter is out of action. They come in handy for covert operations too and have excellent space navigation ability. The seven seater shuttles are equipped with limited warp and impulse drive engines, shields, life support systems, a food replicator and emergency provisions for longer stays on planets.

Constitution-class ships use matter, anti-matter reaction converters regulated by dilithium crystals housed in Main Engineering's warp drive engines which can propel the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 at faster than light warp speed. In the episode "Elaan of Troyius", Scotty used the Dolman's necklace which was stung together with dilithium crystals in order to repair the Enterprise's sabotaged, fused dilithium crystal converter. The Dolmans neckless powered the ship's warp engines with enough energy to shoot off a couple of photon torpedoes at the engaging Klingon ship, badly damaging it and causing it to retreat.

The flagship USS Enterprise is protected by an impressive grid of deflector shields, structural integrity fields, energy forcefields and emergency blast bulkheads that can repel enemy weapons fire and meteorite showers easily.

Starships like Darth Vader's Star Destroyer haven't got an equal chance against the technological might of the Enterprise's phasers and photon torpedoes because Vader's ship, although impressive, only has laser beam technology, cannons and gun turrets capable of making only a few dents in the USS Enterprise's shields. Whose got the most powerful Starship in the Universe? Trekkies do! Thats who! Woo Hoo! But I dare you to prove me wrong! Phasers are more technologically advanced and likely to be hotter that lasers right?

IMAGE CREATOR/OWNER: THE LIGHT WORKS

Tractor beams are the opposite of deflectors which pull space objects as opposed to pushing physical energy away. They are used to take smaller ships in tow or move space debris out of the Enterprise's flight path. At the stern of the USS Enterprise's are the impulse engines and the nacelle propulsion systems which makes safe interplanetary space flight at sublight and warp speed.

Starship primary and secondary systems also includes life support, transporters, deflector shields, starship sensors, structural and inertial systems, forcefields, phasers and photon torpedo tubes, warp core reactor, EPS Power Relay systems,

The USS Enterprise consists of 55 officers of command rank in gold uniforms, 15 communication specialists in red uniforms, 136 medical and scientific research personnel in blue uniforms, 132 engineering specialists and a 88 member security force in Red uniforms who usually meet their maker. In addition to the crews complement of 428, the Enterprise has stateroom accommodation for visiting ambassadors, admirals and V.I.P's

*Constellation NCC-1017, Constitution NCC-1700, Defiant NCC-1764, Eagle NCC-956, Endeavour NCC-1895, Essex NCC-1697, Excalibur NCC-1664, Exeter NCC-1672, Hood NCC-1703, Intrepid NCC-1831, Lexington NCC-1709, Potemkin NCC-1657, Republic NCC-1371 and Yorktown NCC-1717. (Only twelve of these ships were in existence during Kirk's celebrated first five year mission of interstellar exploration.)

One of the technological advances that makes the Constitution class starship possible is the duotronic computer designed by Dr. Richard Daystrom in 2243. In 2268, the Enterprise field tests what Dr. Daystrom hopes will be an even greater invention, the multitronic or M5. Unfortunately Daystrom designed the machine based on his very own memory enigrams which for a moment seemed like one great leap forward for computer science but alas the M5 proved to be more unstable than its creator, Dr. Daystrom who was at a loss to explain its emotional outbursts.

Star Trek depicts a future of bright promise. I hope it stays that way. The USS Enterprise NCC-1701 is a vehicle of peaceful exploration and research resorting to strategic counter measures as a last resort. Starfleet Command represents the "logical" evolution of today's military into a servant of man's quest for knowledge, as well as a the need for a strong defense.

STEVE SCHNIER - USS ENTERPRISE IN SPACE

Hi Trekkers Spacerguy here. Steve Schnier stopped by not too long ago who I totally believe has earned his place in Star Trek and Sci-Fi history. I figured his Enterprise capers might cheer lots of us up so enjoy the fun. 55 years on, Earth still hasn't built a real starship USS Enterprise NCC 1701 to boldly explore and chart the galactic regions of outer space, shocking isn't it?  but have I news for you... 😁

No Enterprise and its a real tragic reality, lol... except that is until now. Imagine my surprise what Steve and his wife did in 2013. Their "Enterprise" launch in Canada and filmed on youtube for posterity is magnificent! Not to be missed, we see the USS Enterprise NCC 1701 stellar ascend into the skies as the starship navigates easily soaring on her maiden flight with little turbulence thanks to Scotty in the engine room.

The good news is readings indicate that the ship may have reached or crossed the 100KM boundary Kármán line which is so cool.

In hindsight I realise now "The U.S.S. Enterprise in Space" is such a sweet moment in Star Trek history and I was a tad tardy reporting this fascinating news, so I beg forgiveness readers. Picard would say it was "the burdens of command" (hangs head down in shame.) 😑but the show must go on! 😁

Star Trek is always exploring the outer limits which began aboard Captain James T Kirk's classic USS Enterprise NCC 1701 in 1966 (prequels and sequels aside) but this is for real!. Anyway, all joking aside heres what Steve said on Wednesday, May 08, 2013

Hello! Nice blog by the way.

My name is Steve Schnier. Just a note to let you know that my wife and I sent a model of STAR TREK’s U.S.S. Enterprise into near-space via weather balloon. The payload reached a height of 95,568’ and hit a top speed of 63 knots or 117 km/hr.

The model was launched from Stayner, Ontario (90 minutes North of Toronto) and was recovered from a remote island in Georgian Bay. It was supposed to travel South towards Toronto - but I miscalculated and it went due North. I should have paid more attention in Math Class.

Space Pirates and Space Heroes

The driving force of many Science fiction shows often embroils starship commanders pitted against unreasonable space pirates. In Star Wars, Darth Vader represents the dark side of the force. His corrupt emotions makes him a great space pirate. I loved the scene in the Empire Strikes Back when Vader grabbed Emperor Palpatine and flung him down the death star's reactor shaft, all to save Luke Skywalker. It was great. Later we find out who the man behind the mask is. We need our science fictional heroes to seek out and defeat galactic enemies of peace.

"Fire when ready, Mr Checkov. Lay in a pattern, fire, fire, fire!" is the Kirk attitude! When a ship gets blown to blue blazes or the bad is guy melted by a ray gun, hey thats what you call sci fi exhilaration. My reaction is nearly always, Yessss!!

A great story creates a sense of danger like a threat to the ship or an invasion force beaming aboard just to get the viewer excited! And it works!! I sure didn't feel sorry for Commander Kruge when Kirk shoved him over the cliff on the Genesis planet in Star Trek III. Kirk and Kruge had been fighting for ages and the klingon had it coming. After all, Kruge had Kirk's son David, murdered. Kirk gets his revenge on the ugly Klingon brute who's trying to drag the captain to his death. Finally Kirk has enough! He gives ugly a boot in the face and sends the Klingon warlord flying into the fiery abyss of Genesis flames below. See you sucker! Geeze, those flames sure must have hurt!!!

When the entertaining, clever android, Commander Data in Star Trek's TNG movie "Nemesis", got blown to bits aboard Praetor Shinzon's ship, it was different. I wasn't celebrating when Shinzon's ship went sky high. I was stunned and thinking wheres Data gone, much like Data's Enterprise-D crew mates. Unfortunately there was no escape pod or floating Data in space.

It was a blunt act for the studio to play on the fans. The Trekkies were hit hard. I was left in a state of puzzled, emotional turmoil. My android hero Data was gone. Sniff, maybe its a hit trend. So which sci fi hero is going to be snuffed out next?

I've recently learnt from trektoday that William Shatner aka Captain James T. Kirk is not going to be in Star Trek XI. What a shocker. Spock, Kirk(TOS) and co-stars work a special magic onscreen. So why delay? New isn't always better. You'd think Paramount could make Trek films with new talent anytime. The "current movie talent" TOS and TNG are missed badly...

William Shatner was very disappointed, but Leonard Nimoy aka Spock got a part. It'll be good to see pointy ears again.

Star Trek XI is the movie where the "trio" Kirk, Spock, and McCoy get to meet up as young men, going back to their academy days.

Moving on, in 1978 the Daily Intelligencer caught my interest. Seemingly Cylon Warriors have a Prime Directive and it doesn't concern ethics or non interference with other cultures. Oh No. The Cylon Prime Directive involves seeking out and destroying all earthling lifeforms. Gasp. Imagine watching that, doesn't it send a shiver of excitement down your back?...

Live Long and prosper, trekker earthlings!

Starfleet's Star Cadets

The motto of Starfleet Academy is "ex astris, scientia," which means "from the stars, knowledge." To qualify, entrants must first meet the basic requirements to satisfy Starfleet by submitting to a test. If chosen the next step involves completing the entrance exam which is conducted over a three day period at a designated Starfleet Testing facility. The Academy exam itself identifies leadership values in promising candidates eager to prove themselves. Integrity, intelligence, courage, imagination, and determination are core qualities of Starfleet Officers ready for battle but committed to peaceful coexistence in the universe. The entrance exam contains the following tests:

1. Dynamic relationship test.
2. Hyperspace physics test.
3. Psych Test.
4. Other Cultures & Species Test.
5. Carlundrum I.Q Test

In 2364, Relva VII's testing facility is where Wesley Crusher competed to gain admittance to Starfleet but failed the first time. Citizens from outside the United Federation of Planets require a testimonial of good character from one of Starfleet's higher ranking officers before being permitted to take the test. Cadets who excelled in class gained privileges as was the case of the Academy's Red Squad, an elite group, who were entrusted to pilot a starship without supervision. Starfleet has demanding standards and applicants must pay strict attention to its rules and procedures.

Successful entrants are expected to excel with their class at a multitude of mental and physical tests or merit the wrath of the Academy Instructor. Based on earth, the academy is located at the Presidio of San Francisco. Founded in 2161, Starfleet Academy's specific goal focuses on the quest for knowledge and the preparation of its cadets for galactic unknowns especially in the cadets first year.

The freshman year subjects the trainee to athletic disciplines which tests their fitness and reflexes with gym training. Healthcare, universal laws of nature, military defense, conferences, lectures, computer simulations, starship operations all form part of the educational program, Officers learn Federation policy and adhere to strict rules. Starfleets General Orders and Regulations and Starship Operations are mandatory.

After four years, cadets graduate to the worthy position of Starfleet Officers and are promoted to the rank of Ensign. For the first time in their lives excited cadets face the prospect of a really groovy future serving aboard a starship and are looking forward to serving and defending the Federation with their very lives. Space exploration also presents many opportunities to encounter new alien lifeforms and discover strange new worlds. Starfleet will put its officers on the front lines where scientific research, rendering aid, tensions and starship battles will broaden crewmens appreciation and perception of alien races and species in the universe.

Cadets will soon discover Starfleet Academy's curriculum challenging them to their limits with some trainees buckling under pressure in the first year. Starship duty is'nt for everyone. In the following years cadets will choose to concentrate on a particular field of knowledge such as engineering, starship navigation, medical degrees take eight years to complete, piloting, scientific research, stellar cartography, communications, security, with the smartest and uber-intrepid of students setting their sights on a career in Starfleet leading to command of a starship.

The Academy's notorious Kobayashi Maru Training Simulator is the next step for these special breed of command cadets. The Computer Simulation will test their nerves for steel and how they react to fear. Senior Officers will scrutinise the cadets response times, disposition and reactions under pressure to get a mindset on the candidates suitability for command. Captain Kirk (TOS) received a commendation for original thinking for being the only Starfleet cadet to have defeated the Kobayashi Maru Test. Lieutenant Savik accused Admiral Kirk (Wrath of Khan) of cheating when he explained his solution for outwitting the Kobayashi simulator by secretly programming the computer.

Starship Captains are a gutsy, rare breed of fast thinkers, well motivated and used to encountering aliens lifeforms, Astronomical Objects and are responsible for the lives and safety of the crew. Captains, Helmsman, and Navigators exercise evasive manoeuvres deployed by the ships computer or else Bridge Officers advise the captain to activate the ship's defense systems manually in order to combat stealth attacks on starships. Officers are trained in peaceful negotiations, hand to hand defense lessons, survival training, starship navigation, piloting, weapons deployment and starship operations which is key to reactive defense and securing the starship from an aggressive attack. Starship defenses are usually activated when warring ships are detected sending the crew from yellow alert to red alert. The Federation however, is one big happy family but all is never what it seems in space.

Captain Picard is an exceptional leader at finding peaceful solutions for races like the Sheliak Corporate, who were repulsed to find human creatures infesting one of their planets and demanded their immediate removal. Picard's entertaining feats of logic ultimately persuade the Sheliak to cave in to his demands (and made me laugh big style) when he nominates the Grizella who were in a six month hibernation sleep at the time to negotiate as a third party on behalf of the U.S.S. Enterprise 1701-D. Of course, the Sheliak are outraged but Picard severs the communication and gives the unyielding Sheliak time to reconsider. Three weeks to evacuate the human creatures or six months, which do you think they chose?

It has been known for Captain James T. Kirk (TOS) to directly order Chekov to blow the U.S.S. Enterprise's enemy ships into smithereens. The captain's defense strategies for cheating death are legendary throughout the galaxy featuring the destruction of the U.S.S. Enterprise 1701 using her auto destruct system to prevent the ship from being captured by Commander Kruge's boarding party. (The Search for Spock.) Starfleet command cadets have a strong desire to win and Kirk never likes to lose. He doesn't believe in the no-win scenario and has on several occasions ordered Mr Spock , Sulu and Mr Scott to warp the U.S.S. Enterprise 1701 out of danger. Its on record Kirk was unsuccessful in maintaining long term relationships with an unspecified amount of women. Due to the perks of command scantily clad women boldly seduced the captain inside and outside of his ships quarters which has forevermore earned him the reputation as a space stud.

The United Federation of Planets charts over 8,000 light years of galactic space with a membership of over 150 planets and over 1,000 semi-automated colonies. Starfleet uses military force as a last resort because it belongs to a peaceful Federation of deep space exploration, however it has trained its graduates to defend Citizens of the Federation and render aid under the most severe conditions.

The Prime Directive (also known as General Order 1) is a basic component of Federation Policy which forbids Starfleet operatives and starships from interfering with the natural evolution of any society or civilisation. This directive is more important than the protection of spaceships or members of Starfleet. Losses are tolerated as long as they are necessary in order to observe this directive." Despite this, Starfleet Captains are skilled in interstellar Combat strategies and defensive maneuvers should an inevitable conflict with an adversary arise. Its interesting to note Starfleet sanctioned the invasion of the planet Organia in essence breaking its own Prime Directive.
