Star Trek Phaser Laser

Blu-ray Laser Phaser

Star Trek Phaser. The future and the past come together as we build a Blu Ray Laser Phaser. I picked up a playstation laser assembly for $45 bucks and a Star Trek classic phaser for $30 bucks. To get to the blu-ray diode, I removed the necessary screws from the laser assembly and carefully extracted the precious Blu-ray diode. After soldering two wires to the diode and installing it in an access laser housing. (mfgcn.com)

I set it aside and moved to the phaser. This was easy to disassemble by removing the light bulb and some screws. Now its time to install the blu-ray. After making some cuts, the laser housing fit perfectly in the phaser light bulb bracket. I also picked up a 150 own resistor 9 volt battery, 9 volt battery snap and a new switch that replaces the phaser trigger. After soldering the connections to the Blu Ray diode, 9 volt battery, the resistor and the new switch, it was time to assemble the phaser.

I had time to make a few more cuts just to get everything to fit right. The 9 volt battery fits snugly where the two double lays originally were. I ran all my wiring and closed the phaser up. Now its time to TEST the Blu Ray Laser Phaser. It glows a very cool violet colour, I've boldly gone where no-man has gone before as I think this is the first time ever a blue ray diode has been put in a Star Trek Classic Phaser.

Dr. Rings is an Ophthalmologist in the US Navy had this comment to make:

Yes, these DVD lasers are QUITE CAPABLE of rendering permanent retinal damage. There are DVD laser mods on the web, including this website, etc., that if performed and "just for fun" aimed at a person's eyes (even from hundreds of yards!) can render permanent and irreversible vision damage.

The Blu ray laser phaser is a cool Star Trek toy for the shelf and demonstrations only. But you've got to ask youself.....where's the fun if you can't play good guy, bad guy? Still feel like building one?

Spock - Fight to the Death.

Remember Kirk's and Spock's fight to the death in Amok Time? well I betcha you never thought Jim Carey aka "Cable Guy" was keen on Star Trek? Lets warp back in time. Science Officer Spock is experiencing a loss of emotional control caused by a build up of adrenaline in his body. In this Star Trek classic we see a crazy guy Spock but there is an underlying logic to his madness.

Questions: Who stepped in and injected Kirk to give the captain a fighting chance? What class of stimulant was it and what were the overall effects?

Image Creator/Owner: Paramount Pictures or CBS Paramount Television.

Spock's in the gripping throes of Pon Farr and needs to go home to vulcan to mate. Dr. McCoy runs tests on the First Officer and tells Kirk that Spock is suffering from an imbalance of toxins that will kill him within a week, eight days max. Kirk's decision to head back to Spock's home world finally happens after much deliberation with crew members, Starfleet, and emotional upheaval for Spock.

It was Starfleet's intention to demonstrate a show of force to the Klingon Empire by sending their best Federation starships at the Altair VI border.

Dr McCoy discovers that Spock's body is being flooded with adrenaline. If the Enterprise doesn't reach Vulcan in eight days, Spock will die. So what did Starfleet say when Captain Kirk asked for authorisation?

"Forget it Kirk, he's just the half breed vulcan!!, Altair VI has top priority. Starfleet out."

At the recommendation of Dr McCoy, Kirk flatly disobeyed the chain of command and risked his starship command. In a bid to save First Officer Spock's life, the USS Enterprise 1701 diverts her course and proceeds to Vulcan in-order to find a cure for the vulchie's life threatening blood fever.

Amok Time shows us some very interesting character moments amidst a wonderful backdrop of Vulcan scenery in the Star Trek continuum. Spock meets his lovely Vulcan fiancee T'pring (pre arranged by the parents ever since their childhood by a meeting of minds.) T'pring only had plans for her secret Vulcan lover Stonn revealed after the battle.

Image Creator/Owner: Paramount Pictures or CBS Paramount Television.

T'Pau is the High Priestess who presides over the wedding ceremony, with Kirk on standby as T'pring's champion who is forced to fight a duel to the death with his best friend!! This isn't just any ordinary wedding and I was surprised to notice Spock's parents absent.

I guess Spock's mom and dad didn't have the stomachs to watch their only son slaughter innocents on their precious ancestral grounds. Star Trek fans see Spock's home world "Vulcan" for the first time in this episode with the science officer's famous words "Live Long, T'Pau and Prosper" voiced for the first time. This is just cool classic Star Trek.

Kirk agrees to fight for T'pring but is mortified to discover, its a duel to the death. Spock and Kirk are evenly matched except for the thin Vulcan air which takes its toll on the captain. McCoy gives Kirk an injection to give him a fighting chance in the Vulcan atmosphere. The fight resumes and Spock strangles Kirk, dropping his captain's apparently lifeless body to the ground. Dr McCoy steps in and confirms Spock's worst nightmare. Kirk is dead. Shock sweeps over Mr Spock snapping him out of his Plak tow blood fever. T'pring's reason for invoking the challenge is because she wants to marry Stonn. The marriage is cancelled. Back on the starship Enterprise 1701 all is revealed by Dr McCoy who faked the captain's death with a neural paralyser. Of course, Spock displays a momentary lapse of emotional control with a big grin, when he sees the captain alive.

Jim Carey did a re-enactment of the "Amok Time" with Spock and Kirk's - fight to the death duel in his "Cable Guy" movie. It was brilliant. In the duel scene you'll see why this master of crazy comedy is just so funny with Chip and Kovac slugging it out in the arena. Jim Carey's improvised "Star Trek" crazed sound effects are totally hysterical. I love how Cable Guy carries on with humming the "Amok Time" lyric as he walks away from Kovac (Broderick), triumphant and with his hands held high.

"All right you want to play rough? Daddy can play rough."
Da-na, na, na, na, na, naaa, na-naa, na, na.
"Like when Spock had to play Kirk on Star Trek, best friends forced to do battle." - Cable Guy.
"Chip this isn't funny, will you stop it!!"
"The name is Spock, if we don't battle to the death, they will kill us both." - Cable Guy.
"This isn't Star Trek" screams Kovac.

Lol. that's what Kovac thinks, try telling the Cable Guy that.

Answers: Dr. McCoy saved Captain Kirk. He stepped in with his hypospray and injected Kirk with a triox compound telling Kirk it should help him breathe better. The stimulant was in fact a neural paralyser which faked Kirk's death and saved Spock's life.

Star Trek vs Star Wars

The trekkie and darkside ravers on Youtube are funny. It seems the endless Star Trek vs Star Wars debate will never end. Two spaceships are facing each other in a battle for their very lives.

Image Owner/Creator: Paramount Pictures or CBS Paramount Television.

Which one will reign supreme over the galaxy? Could it be Picard's Enterprise of the Federation or Darth Vader's Imperial Star Destroyer? One way to settle this is perhaps by analysing the spaceships firepower, like the fanboys are doing on Youtube except how can a Trek or Empire sci fi addict be objective about this? So Never underestimate the Power of the Dark side! right?
wrong! We always question darkside reasoning. Captain Picard's Galaxy Class Enterprise NCC 1701-D photon torpedoes can be fired in concert with its phasers. This is the Federation's Flagship, our pride and joy for most Star Trek TNG fans. It carries a full payload of 275 torpedoes. One of these Federation sweeties has an explosive yield of up to 64 megatons. Multiply that by a maximum of up to ten photon torpedoes. That equals 644 megatons of power fired in successive pattern, after the phasers have melted the enemy's target's defense shields. That should make one helluva kaaa-booom! Yeah!! Blow that sucker. Woo Hoo!!!

Except theres one problem. I've uncovered spaceship specifications which makes for interesting reading and I'm sure Galactic Empire enthusiasts will, enjoy the news. So here it comes.

Jango Fett's small patrol craft is a Star Wars ship of the Galactic Empire of even technological magnitude, to compare against the United Federation of Planets Galaxy Class Enterprise NCC 1701-D. I know this is like admitting defeat trekkies but what if Picards flagship is outmatched by Fetts ship? Starfleet code of honour won't protect us thats for sure.
I watch Star Trek and try to imagine a happy, untroubled 24th century timeline for humanoids. Millions of fans love Star Trek and Star Wars. Its true. So trekkies, lets put down our phasers and not take these spaceship specs to heart even if the Jango Fetts starship specs are based on mere speculation.

Star Wars: Slave-1 specs: Published in Star Wars Episode II Incredible Cross-Sections.

Main guns: 64000 Gigawatts (2 kilotons per shot, 480 rpm firing rate onscreen in AOTC for time-averaged power output rather than peak output).
Missiles: 190 megatons (tail-launched missiles; seismic charge mines are approx 12000 megatons).
Sublight acceleration: 2500G.
Operational range: not stated (however, Obi-Wan's starfighter has an operational range of 150,000 light-years, or similar).
Shield heat dissipation: not stated (however, Amidala's personal yacht has shield dissipation of 2 billion Gigawatts peak, or similar).
Reactor power: not stated (however, Amidala's personal yacht has power output of 7 billion Gigawatts max, or similar).
Max hyperspace speed: not stated (however, same-day flight from core to galactic outer-rim systems requires speeds in excess of 10 million c). c = speed of light.

Star Trek: Enterprise-D Specs: Published in Star Trek Next Generation Technical Manual.

Main phasers: 3.6 Gigawatts
Photon torpedoes: 64 megatons max explosive yield. (The actual explosive output figure is shy of 64 megatons due to the matter, anti-matter intermix delay time.)
Sublight acceleration: 1000G.
Operational range: 2750 light-years.
Shield heat dissipation: 3311 Gigawatts peak.
Reactor power: ~4 billion Gigawatts at max warp 9.6
Max Warp speed ~2000c or speed of light in a vacuum (warp 9.6)

On the face of it Picard manages to bag one of the bad guys! Does'nt that mean the Enterprise-D busted the Empire up? Darth Vader will need to regroup his troops for the next battle, I wonder why Jango Fett's spaceship did'nt come to the rescue?

Merry Christmas Trekkies and may the Force go with the Galactic Empire.

Gowron's Reign

In Star Trek's Sins of the Father Robert O' Reilly a.k.a. Gowron plays one of the most influential sci fi warriors of all time. I'd like to say science fiction heroes, but Klingon history has recorded Gowron's miscreant deeds, nevertheless this rascal is still one of my trek favourites. Captain Picard's choice for the Chancellor of Qo'noS (pronounced Kronos) stood in Gowron's favour who was a great believer in politics and honour. The other contender for the leadership, Duras the traitor, got snuffed out by d'akturak (iceman) Worf for killing K'Ehleyr, which was hardly surprising. But it was a shocking surprise when the Klingon High Commander K'mpec took ill from poisoned Veridem Six. bloodwine.

Victory was within Gowron's reach and the Empire was his there for the taking! No-body was going to stand in way except for the human Picard, observing Klingon tradition. A "no contest" fight on his hands was a sure win for Gowron but Picard had to stall for time in order to discover which one of the contenders murdered K'mpec! That left one little P'atk problem to be resolved but until the winner was declared by Captain Picard, Duras and Gowron would never rest easy with a treacherous murderer on the loose.

Image Owner/Creator: Paramount Pictures or CBS Paramount Television.

K'mpec's successor maintained his grip on power by undermining potential political opponents like Martok (he was Gowron's Military Defence Advisor) and challengers to his leadership like Toral but.. General Martok's rise to fame with the adoration of the Klingon people came as a rude awakening to Gowron. Gowron expressed his reasoning in a fiery, confrontational manner but it was his ruthless military tactics that finally became his undoing..

Despite Martok's glorious war campaigns, Gowron sought to assert his leadership with severe battle strategies against the Dominion with Martok as the fall guy. The loss of Klingon lives was dear but Gowron was beyond caring. The taste of power was sweet and the stakes were high. The Klingon Empire was expanding everywhere and Klingons were expendable.... But so what? Klingons consider it an honour to die in battle. "Better to die on your feet than live on your knees"

The Klingon chancellor's dishonourable actions called for an explosive challenge from General Martok which passed to Worf also of the House of Martok. General Martok refused to engage in combat with his Ruler, Gowron, Leader of the High Council and Chancellor of the Klingon Empire. Worf saw differently and in 2375, the flash of the bat'leth blades ensued. Worf silenced Gowron for good which ended his territorial reign in the quadrant and saw Martok installed as Chancellor Of the Klingon Empire.

"Hail Martok, leader of the Empire! Leader of destiny." -- Worf

15. The Rite of Passage in the Klingon Empire is known by what name? What special right does the ceremony allow Klingons exercise?

Here are the answers for the "Trekker Test" I posted earlier in August. Hooray!

1. Admiral Jarok has visited more than a hundred worlds.
2. In 1929 the term Science Fiction is invented. Before 1929 allot of proto SF was written by authors under such genres as Utopias, Scientific Romances, (Hmmm.... I wonder, now that does sound curious.) Fantastic Voyages, Lost World Tales, etc.
3. Dark Lord of the Galaxy, Darth Vader flung Emperor Palpatine down the Star Destroyer's reactor shaft 'cause Vader couldn't bear losing Luke Skywalker at the hands of the evil hoodie with the force lightening fingers.
4. Commander Data's upper spinal column is made of a poly alloy.
5. In 1818 Mary Shelly's "Frankenstein" is published. Science Fiction is born.
6. Worf – son of Mogh, of the Klingon House of Martok, of the Human family Rozhenko; On a technicality you could say Worf's last name is Rozhenko although he does'nt use the surname to identify himself.

7. Isaac Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics are:
I. A robot may not injure a human being, or through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
II. A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the first law.
III. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the first or second laws.
Fourth Law of Robotics

8. Darth Vader is the meanest, determined Sci-Fi Pirate in the cosmos.
9. Three SF writers - John Jacob Astor, Jacques Futrelle and W.T. Stead went down on the Titanic.
10. Picard's right eye is 00.4 higher than his left. (The unit of measurement refers to either millimeters or centimeters.)
11. Holodeck matter leaves Picard's Enterprise-D holodeck four times. A wealthy socialite kisses Picard in "The Big Goodbye" Her lipstick is still on his face when he's on the Enterprise and Beverly wipes it off. Wesley plays snowball with one of his buddies and land one on Picard when the Captain is standing outside the holodeck doors. HaHa! Wesley gets soaked after falling in the holodeck stream, poor kid, runs into Captain Picard and drips water all over the Enterprise's carpet outside the holodeck doors! Picard's unimpressed! The water should'nt be there. Data brings a holodeck piece of paper of the U.S.S. Enterprise drawn on it to Captain Picard who's in the Conference Room. It should have dematerialized.
12. Worf Protested to playing the fool for Q's amusement. Sir, I protest. I am not a merry man.
13. Lieutenant Reginald Barclay 's IQ grew to 1250 to 1450 during the Nth Degree.
14. U.S.S. Victory Registration on stardates 44664.5 to 44668.1 is Ncc 9754
15. The rite of passage in the Klingon Empire is when a klingon attains the spiritual rank of warrior.. Age of Ascension.

K'mpec's Dead Long Live Gowron.

Robert O' Reilly is one of Star Trek's exciting Klingon Characters. He plays Gowron, son of M'rel in Star Trek-TNG episode Reunion who as one of the two bloodthirsty contenders for the leadership of the High Council makes his challenge aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise-D laying claim to the Klingon Empire with Captain Picard as mediator. The other challenger is the shifty Klingon Duras. Stalling for time is'nt exactly Picard's style but the chancellor of the Klingon Empire and Leader of the High Council, K'mpec has been fighting off the grim reaper's evil grip for days now. Time is short and Sto-vo-kor's warriors are smiling down on K'mpec.

Image Owner/Creator: Paramount Pictures or CBS Paramount Television.

Abassador K'Ehleyr, K'mpec's aide beams over from the flagship Vorn and tells Picard that the Klingon Empire is on the brink of civil war.. Klingon against klingon. Unless the Enterprise-D handles the "Klingon situation" Kronos will erupt ito whats sure to be a terrifying struggle for power dragging in neighbouring planets and eventually the precious Federation. K'mpec's still alive but has been poisoned with veridium six. He tells Picard aboard the Vorn that theres no cure. The dying Klingon leader wants Jean Luc Picard to Arbitrate the power struggle after hes snuffed it. Picard's trys to worm his way out but no-one else can be trusted! Now its Picard's duty to investigate which candidate murdered K'mpec using this sneaky slow acting poison and desinate a ruler for the glorious Empire!

Image Owner/Creator: Paramount Pictures or CBS Paramount Television.

Sto-vo-cor forbid should a sneaky, dishonourable Klingon ever be allowed to rule the Empire! Veridium six smacks of Romulans!! Picard was in the deep deep sh--. Up to his neck in it and he could'nt talk his way out of this one. HaHa! This is great science fiction with a mystery and characters gradually unfolding in a wonderful humanistic plot with worf tying them together. This material sets the ground work for Deepspace Nine, the darkest of all the Star Treks giving the spinoff series substance to work from with and an exhilerating, fighting Klingon character, Worf aka Michael Dorn.

Picard initiates the Ja'chuq much to Duras and Gowron's maddening outrage which delays matters long enough to snare K'mpec's murderous pahtk!! Worf springs into action and settles old scores in Reunion. The year is 2367 During this sci-fi year, Gowron's appointed chancellor. In 2368 Gowron's Leadership of the High Council is confirmed when he crushed the rebellion led by the cunning Duras sisters Lursa and B'Etor. The Duras family are powerful but women cannot serve on the council, so the Klingon lovelies present Duras's illegitimate son!!! Toral, who the sisters claim is Duras's rightful heir. Gowron is sickened.

Image Owner/Creator: Paramount Pictures or CBS Paramount Television.

In a flash the madmans crazed eyes are alight with hatred and a depraved grin appears on his face. Gowron leaps from his council throne with his warriors d'k tahg in his hand.... A boy leader up for the High Council! "Don't make me laugh" sneers Gowron as he breaks up chortling. Toral is defiant but unnerved.

Gowron continues "What harlets lair did you find him in Lursa?" Humiliation is written all over Toral's face. Gowron rejects the insolent klingon boy and the council is split. This Klingon scoundrel Gowron became chancellor of the Empire and managed Kronos during civil war in the face of Dominion and Romulan interference. Gowron is a true Klingon warrior until about 2375 when he begins reckless battle strategies against the Dominion fighting a losing battle at the expense of his own warriors. Deepspace Nine's "Tacking Into The wind" sees an epic battle waged between two adversaries which snuffed out one of my favourite trekkie characters. sob, sniff. I'm still in shock.

U.S.S. Enterprise Starship Surprises

Seven U.F.P. starships have carried the name Enterprise and with each ship came a crew of highly skilled individuals dedicated to their duty and captain. In Federation history, only a few of these Starfleet ships had a really distinguished service, notably the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC 1701, U.S.S. Enterprise NCC 1701- A, U.S.S. Enterprise NCC 1701 - D, and the Enterprise NX-01.

Pictures or CBS Paramount Television.

The first Enterprise NX-01 embarked from Earth in 2151 with a high powered innovative warp five engine designed by Zefram Cochrane and Henry Archer. These were exhilarating days for Earth's Starfleet earthies and our pointy eared, Vulchies who forged new friendships in an era that would later form as the United Federation of Planets in 2161. Jonathan Archer drew the lucky straw and got to command the Enterprise NX-01. This sleek revolutionary ship paved the way with impressive technologies commonplace on federation starships today. The Enterprise NX-01 was no longer a literal flight of fantasy.

The U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 is the second starship to bear the name. She was launched in 2245 from San Francisco Yards orbiting Earth and destroyed in 2285 by Kirk's hand to prevent "a lethal weapon of ultimate power" from falling into enemy Klingons hands. The USS Enterprise has become legendary thoughout the galaxy. She has had five captains. Capt Robert April first commanded her. On April 7th 2250 Capt April returned the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC 1701 to Earth.

The Enterprise 1701 was neither lost or destroyed during her first 5 year mission of intergalactic exploration. This fact wasn't lost on Earth's citizens and elevated April's ship and crew to the status of living legends. So you see, this USS Enterprise became every fleshling's symbol of hope and inspiration in the quadrant. Starfleet Academy was swarmed with applications that year.

The USS Enterprise 1701 was the only survivor out of twelve Constitution class starships to return to Earth! Trekkies know starship dangers are commonplace in space. Its not unusual for enemy photon torpedoes and phaser blasts to break the ice between foes, followed by talks and negotiations with Picard doing his "we are a vessel of peaceful exploration" bit and Captain Kirk firing phasers first and asking questions later.

Creator/Owner: Paramount Pictures or CBS Paramount Television.

In 2251, Captain Christopher Pike took the Enterprise 1701 out for two more five year missions at the helm before Kirk. We see Pike in Star Treks "The Cage" TOS and in the Menagerie. Under General Order 7 it was forbidden to visit Talos IV. Why? and heres the shocker....... our benevolent Federation has as of 2267 the only death penalty still left on its books.

Its true! (My heart goes out to those trekkies still in shock by this news) Viewers learn about talosians and their unusual ability to project illusions in the Menagerie Part 1 and 2. (which airs on the 13th and 15th of November in cinemas across America and Canada) Starfleet sees this as a threat and in true military style forbids contact but we can still rely on good old Spock, can't we?

Next, we come to the architect and mastermind Captain James T. Kirk. This guy commanded the U.S.S. Enterprise 1701 during his rein of "peace" against the Klingons, Romulans, mad men, meglomaniac computers, powerful entities, a crazy lizard gorn and many others with the help of federation firepower. Kruge's second in command called Kirk's Enterprise a "battleship" which Kirk has used in combat to eliminate assassins when all else failed. (Not to mention blowing stuff to bits! Yeah!! Go Kirk, Go Kirk, You Are The Man.)

Creator/Owner: Paramount Pictures or CBS Paramount Television.

Commander Kruge saw Kirk's ship as an opportunity to bring the mighty Federation to its knees. The starship had after all "a weapon of ultimate power and destruction." known as the Genesis device, capable of creating and destroying entire worlds. The Enterprise 1701 was equipped with 14 science labs, 23 decks and a skilled crew, a miracle worker, photon torpedoes and phaser banks, Kirk took the Enterprise 1701 where none had ever boldly dared to go before.

James Tiberius Kirk's first five year mission lasted from 2264 to 2269 with Star Trek The Motion Picture and Captain Willard Decker in 2273. In 2286 the constitution U.S.S. Enterprise 1701-A (third starship to bear the name) was commissioned and placed under Captain Kirk's command by the Federation Council and Starfleet Command. Kirk's crew saved Earth on numerous occasions from rogue villains, lunatic machines, and evil space entities. These facts demonstrated to the citizens of the federation just how dangerous starship exploration really was and as a result the starship Enterprise became famous overnight.

Captain Picard's Galaxy Class Enterprise NCC 1701-D was the flagship of flagships. This ship was beautiful. Picard's Enterprise got thrashed in Veridian III space by a defective twenty year old Klingon bird of prey. Lursa and B'Etor ran rings around Commander William Riker and had fun blowing the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC 1701-D to shreds. I was fuming at Enterprise's Number 1 who was calling the shots while Picard was on the Planet below. If I wanted to be mean, I could blame the Flagship of the Federation becoming a sitting duck because counsellor Troi was at the helm. That was Rikers fatal error which eventually condemned the ship. Meanwhile Geordi La Forge was losing it big time in Main Engineering.

What would the real Captain have done? In a nanosecond, Picard would have scarpered over to the helm and warped the Enterprise-D out of danger himself. I have to admit, I had a few emotional outbursts of my own that day. By now, poor Enterprise-D is really shagged and the Duras Sisters luck eventually runs out thanks to WORF, so what does Riker do next? He slams the Enterprise-D into the planet below, So yes, we can totally blame Riker for wrecking the Enterprise-D.

Under Captain Kirk's command the U.S.S. Enterprise 1701 gathered the masses and made the daily Trek News. Our trek heroes explored sci fi's fabric of reality employing faster than light engines, warp speeds, teleportation transporters, shuttlecraft, weapons and defensive systems, turbolifts, matter/antimatter engines, inertial damping fields, jefferies tubes, deflector shields, tractor beams, duotronic computers (designed by Richard Daystrom in 2243,) sensor arrays, medical facilities, engineering systems and crew quarters designed to specific Starfleet specifications.

I think Kirk should definitely have put in a word about the jefferies tubes. Why are they so small? Even Captain Picard should have considered it his duty and put in a special report to Starfleet about the design flaw and health risks to the crew. I wonder why they never did? after all there were five captains of the USS Enterprise NCC 1701 and NCC 1701-A combined. Strange isn't it?
