W is for Whoopi Goldberg

 W is for Whoopi Goldberg (Oscar and Golden Globe Winner) who played Guinan aboard the starship USS Enterprise NCC 1701-D in Star Trek the Next Generation. Whoopi has a massive following across the world and her awards speak for themselves. She's starred in lots of movies and tv shows and has been a fan of Star Trek since the classic series. 

Heres a GIF I created with Guinan  giving Q (John DeLancie) a dose of his own medicine. Star Trek TNG Deja Q is satisfying to watch. The story goes Guinan is centuries old and wise beyond her years. So when omnipotent Q turns up at the Enterprise-D doors and says: I have no powers!!!  No-one believes him except maybe Guinan who gets an idea with a fork.

Vanessa Williams gets Miss America Apology

 V is for Vanessa Williams. The former Miss America and pop singer was a natural to be cast as Arandis, the facilitator for the Tembiti Lagoon on the pleasure planet Risa in Star Trek except theres more. 

Here she is on youtube singing and receiving an apology from CEO Sam Haskell 32 years later after having to hand back her Miss America crown in 1984. According to youtuber Nadi1010 heres what happened.

 Her pictures were leaked, without her consent, to Playboy. In today’s world that would be considered a sex crime. She was one of the first public figures to be a victim of a sex crime, and she was blamed for it. To me, this apology reflects our cultural shift around how we treat women and sexual assault survivors. Looking out far ahead, I can see an arc bend.

U is for Uhura

 U is for Uhura. Lieutenant Nyota Uhura is a multitalented officer in communications and technology which gives her the skill to operate Spocks Science Station, navigation and even command of the USS Enterprise NCC 1701. Uhura is remembered best for opening hailing frequencies with many ships, aliens and planets. Here she is having a nice friendly chat with some Klingons. Can you guess which Star Trek movie?
