U is for Uhura. Lieutenant Nyota Uhura is a multitalented officer in communications and technology which gives her the skill to operate Spocks Science Station, navigation and even command of the USS Enterprise NCC 1701. Uhura is remembered best for opening hailing frequencies with many ships, aliens and planets. Here she is having a nice friendly chat with some Klingons. Can you guess which Star Trek movie? Heres a hint, only two actresses played Uhura - Nichelle Nichols and Zoe Saldana, and a clip from the film.

I can't imagine U standing for anything but Uhura in the Star Trek Universe. That was an exciting clip, I need to watch Into Darkness again!
I am (of course) clueless. Again.
I do love the story of how Nichols almost left the show until others convinced her of her character's importance.
Martin Luther King was one who told her to stay liz
Thanks EC its kind of you to visit again and you know I'm clueless at the best of times too.
High fives Doug, I must too. Into Darkness had lots of Star Trek class.
I've only seen the JJ Abrams Star Treks. I really liked this character in those movies. She had the Strong Female Character down pact, which I always appreciate.
She’s strong in character and in real life Jamie, (they both are) which the role demanded, Nichols met Obama at the White House too. Zoe Saldana is quite the eye catching little number.
Uhura is an amazing character. I remember reading that Whoopi Goldberg was watching Star Trek when she was nine years old, and started yelling "Come here quick everyone, there's a black lady on television and she ain't no maid!" It just shows how important representation is. I liked Saldana's portrayal of her, too. Into Darkness is a great film.
I can honestly say Nichelle Nichols was one of my first loves. As a kid watching TOS reruns back in the 1970s she was a goddess. The fact that I live in the American South made my feelings somewhat problematic.
I was hoping to see the original Uhura to be honest. Nichelle Nichols was ready to quit until Martin Luther King spike to her. Amazing!!
