R2 says Hello from Outerspace

Earth's International Space Station has awoken their first humanoid Robonaut from his deep space sleep. Isn't that cool? But who or what is R2? I guess Robonaut 2 could be a distant relative of Star Trek's Mr Data who's definitely more than just a machine. While neither of these droids eat, sleep, drink or feel pain, their human-like features and capabilities are a source of great inspiration to us mere mortals.

R2's full name is Robonaut 2 Unit B to be precise but like Data he's got tons of personality despite having no emotions! Strange but true. NASA's white tinman doesn't even talk but since February, R2's already got an enthusiastic 47,000 followers just by tweeting on Twitter! "Those electrons feel GOOD! One small step for man, one giant leap for tinman kind," was Robonauts first tweet.

Our technological friend will prove really useful when his space legs get him walking. Robonaut 2 was born on May 7th 2010 in his hometown Houston, Texas. Nasa plans to get Tinman souped up for spacewalks assisting his human colleagues during tedious and dangerous missions. Some of R2's extraordinary abilities include tweeting, multi-tasking with the ISS computer consoles, conducting mental and physical tasks using human dexterity to adjust things, performing precise repairs on satellites with the technological toughness to survive the vacuum of space.

Starships and Starbases

The starships you see here are made to scale and represent actual size and proportions of ships in Starfleet service today except Matt Deckers which is just leaving Spacedock.

Here is a rare image of the United Federation's most powerful spacefleet returning to Starbase 234, where Captain Picard later launches his armada from on Stardate 45236.4 to blockade Romulan forces supplying the Duras Family during the Klingon Civil War.

Can you name the ships? Picard, Kirk, Janeway, Sulu, Matt Decker, Beverly and Worf are in command.

The spacedock was first seen in 2270 orbiting earth. In the early days of Star Trek, Starbases were fewer in number, often leaving a lone starship in a fix to make repairs. Luckily ships like Kirks U.S.S. Enterprise 1701 had "miracle workers" like Scotty who always saved the ship. God bless him.

Starbases are massive orbital space stations, larger than planet based cities with large windows and domes overlooking the mooring bay. These observation points offer excellent views of space with a steady stream of fascinating incoming and outgoing starships. The spacedock itself has vast interior mooring bays and recreation facilities, giving weary explorers time to take shore leave. (The Organian Peace Treaty between the Federation and the Klingon Empire established this.)

Starbase operations are straight forward and range from administration duties (which can be shared with non federation races) to secure starship berthing, by mooring tractor beams which lock ships into position. Gangways are secured to airlocks using correct pressurization and stabilization procedures which allow trusting souls to be easily ferried from starship to starbase. Transporters and turbo lifts cars are standard. Starbases serve a medley of purposes for non-stop space exploration, operation and security.

Starbases are used for meetings, pickups and the transfer of medical supplies too. Starbase 173, located in Sector 23 near the Romulan Neutral Zone, is the site of proceedings to establish Lt. Commander's Data's sentience, and Starbase 718 is the location of an emergency conference attended by Captain Picard to discuss the possibilities of a new Romulan incursion into Federation space. Starbase 313 is the base from where the Enterprise picks up an assortment of scientific equipment for transport to the Guernica System on Stardate 44614.6 while Starbase 343 is the transfer point for medical supplies the Enterprise delivers to Alpha Leonis on Stardate 43421.9

Romulans are tricky. I think any alien with starship cloaking technology installed on his ship has to be classified as a spy up to no good. Look what happened to Kirk when he exposed General Chang's cloaked Bird of Prey and Chang was a Klingon!! A Klingons Honor means more to him than his very life! I guess Chang had better sense, just kidding.... So why doesn't anyone call the cloaking device spy technology? It is undeniably sneaky.

William Shatner Friend and Defender of Earth Boldly goes where no Blue Orgin has gone Before

Merry Christmas Trekkers and to usher in 2022 heres some Bezos and Shatner Blue Origin fanfare with their rocket shooting off into space. You'll remember the legendary captain James T. Kirk of the USS Enterprise 1701 from Star Trek the Classic Series? Well here he is....

These are our friends, our defenders and our protectors of the United Federation of Earth. Well, good as - apparently William Shatner has gone up into Space big time Trekkers for real, (only Joan Collins is not in agreement! )😁 one to beam up Scotty! 

Without hope what have we got?  I'm going up into Space, How many people can say that? Jeff Bezos Concept to make living and pollution a thing of the past.

“I’m so filled with emotion about what just happened,” the screen legend said. “It’s extraordinary. I hope I never recover from this. I hope I can maintain what I feel now.”

Top 100 Sci-Fi Spaceships?

This week I found a video with a cool slideshow of 100 'Top' science fiction spaceships. Most of these 100 'spaceships' originated from various science fiction movies and tv shows. A few others emerged from cartoon shows and comic Sci-Fi spoofs like the Thunderbirds, Spaceballs and Galaxy Quest. So sit back and enjoy the spaceship sideshow. A couple of space stations are included which is fine but why Eagle 5 (Spaceballs) made no. 45 is a mystery.

How does your geek feel about the sequencing of these starships and starfighters? Watching the video is certainly a good way of testing your sci-fi knowledge in a showdown with some friends. So let the battle of wits begin and hey...

Star Trek's Alien Anomalies

Why does Science Fiction flow through our veins? When I look back on Kirk, Spock and Dr Mc Coy's adventures in Star Trek's classic series seeking out new lifeforms on new civilisations, I realise I am one of millions of fans experiencing pure unforgettable joy.

Look at this scratchy old picture of the USS Enterprise NCC 1701. Now put yourself in a shuttlecraft following her at warp speed.

In my youth I loved watching cosmic starlines whizzing by especially when the starship USS Enterprise NCC 1701 was in full speed pursuit of the bad guys in the enemy alien ship. I've tweaked the photo so we can enjoy the awesomeness of the USS Enterprise in a high speed race, hehe. I still get weird sensations when Kirk orders the impossible from Scotty pushing the warp engines to breaking limit. Despite his tough task master Scotty has a secret formula.

GEORDI "I told the Captain I would have this diagnostic done in an hour."
SCOTTY "And how long will it really take you?"
GEORDI "An hour!"
SCOTTY "Oh, you didn't tell him how long it would really take, did you?"
GEORDI "Of course I did."
SCOTTY "Oh, laddie, you have a lot to learn if you want people to think of you as a miracle worker."

SCOTTY "Starship captains are like children. They want everything right now and they want it their way. The secret is to give them what they need, not what they want.'

When I was little I believed Star Trek was real. It just had to be! At first I puzzled over why so many black scratches flickered over the tv set.

Ahh Haa! I told myself the camera lens was getting dirty from space dust!

Mr Spock would be proud of my pure logical reasoning because space is a dusty place. Awe sets in and my fears for the film crew soon dissolve. It was logical to presuppose that a camera guy was somewhere behind the scenes in zero space gravity doing a tough job. My admiration for the dude filming Kirk's flagship switched to sheer amazement.

Isn't he great, without him there'd be no Star Trek!!!

More black scratches flickered over the tv screen which I accepted as actual space phenomena encountered by the Enterprise on her heroic missions. I grew to love these mysterious encounters because in a way it was like seeing UFOs for real, hehe. One thing was clear in my young mind. Now we have scientific evidence caught on camera!

I got excited at the prospect of the USS Enterprise running into more alien anomalies but what about the camera guy? It was only a matter of time before the klingons would show which meant only one thing.



'Red Alert, all hands to Battle Stations!'

I soon forgot about the camera guy and besides the Enterprise was way too fast. The film crew were probably in direct contact with Scotty I mused. The Klingons will never catch up either because Mr Spock's too smart and Scotty knows his engines inside out.

Enterprise Yen

The spaceage marriage of convenience is coming to an end. Heres an early video of the Space Shuttle Enterprise in 'free flight' which landed a little shakily later on at Edwards Air Force Base. The Enterprise never actually lifted off up into space, instead here she is flying on her first and last voyages. Sniff, I feel so emotional.

NASA officials were stumped by all the fan mail pouring through their gates in 1977 but the message was clear. The needs of the many outweighs the needs of NASA. Officials cleverly employed vulcan logic to counteract the trekkie storm which flooded in and engulfing its people. NASA updates about a space shuttle soon to be named after a world war II carrier called ENTERPRISE in honor of the original USS Enterprise NCC 1701 from Star Trek TOS succeeded in calling a ceasefire. It actually WORKED! Star Trek fans reached for the stars and their dream became a reality! The write in TREK CAMPAIGN WON igniting the human adventure with the Space Shuttle "Enterprise."

I'm going to miss the Enterprise but then who said 'all good things must come to an end!'

Science Fiction Words

Star Trek has thrilled earthies with its cosmic treks through time for over 40 years now. So here is my favourite list of sci fi words to bring extra sparkle into your trekker lives.

1. Earthling is an all time favourite by Science Fictional writers as is earthers, carbon based lifeforms, earthies, sapient beings, pan-dimensional beings and little green men.

2. Cybernetics is such a cool word. Dr Noonien Soong was the foremost scientific expert in cybernetics and was also Star Trek's father to the android called Data. The science of computers was given its name - Cybernetics - by Norbert Weiner.

3.Nanites, Cyborgs, Androids, Daleks, Jedi's, Mutants and the Bug Eyed Monster are well known for thrilling fans with their fierceness and pure logical reasoning. Ehm, the Jedi Luke did get a bit emotional occasionally but he was a human afterall.

4. Death ray, Phaser, Disruptor, Disintegrator, Ray gun, heat ray, laser gun. We humanoids do like to shoot each other. Its in our nature to blow up the bad guy's ship!! Yeah!! It is is'nt it?


The Trekkie Building

5. Exoskeleton. We all know the Terminator starring Arnold Swartzenegger, don't we? He's the charming dude who hunts down humans and then blows them away. Like I said he's a nice guy.

6. Warpspeed! If you've got a starship without warpspeed then you've been had mate. Warp drives distort the shape of the space time continuum. Ask Picard for advice. Don't be a sucker get yourself a proper ship. There are variations on this word like time-warp, warp technological worlds and space-warp etc

7. Mind-meld. Vulcans in the Star Trek universe use mindmelds to communicate and extract information from out of the heads of tormented minds, criminals and yes, law abiding federation citizens too! If you've got something to hide, forget it. Mr Spock's magnetic fingers will suck the information right out of your brain! Zachary Quinto is the new Mr Spock, sniff, see the news.


8. Positronic. Commander Data of the Star Trek Universe has a Positronic Brain. Isaac Asimov first imagined this concept in his first robot stories in 1939 and 1940. The word "Positronic" was coined by this world maestro of science fiction with five hundred books and several hundred articles to his credit.. This word can be used in conjunction with many other words for example positronic supercomputer, positronic robot, positronic brain etc.

9. Space-satans. These guys cause all the havoc in the galaxy. Darth Vader is one of the best space-pirates in the galactic universe. Go vader, Go Vader. Go bust them up!! Just why did he have to take his helmet off? It wrecked his mysterious super coolness!!!

10. Beam-me-up-Scotty! Fun to say if you're messing around with your mates or you happen to be Captain James T. Kirk beaming up to the U.S.S. Enterprise 1701.

STAR TREK DISCOVERY RENEWED FOR SEASON 2

Star Trek: Discovery is be distributed almost everywhere in the world on Netflix, except for the US where it will be available on CBS All Access. The series is being broadcast by CBS Studios International on Netflix in 188 countries and in Canada on Bell Media's Space channel and OTT service CraveTV.

CBS have released a trailer for episode 10 of Discovery, "Despite Yourself," to get us excited for the series return, in January! So now heres the USS Discovery lost in space.....

STAR TREK: DISCOVERY’s cast includes Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Jason Isaacs, Anthony Rapp, Michelle Yeoh, Shazad Latif, Mary Wiseman, Mary Chieffo, James Frain....

All the wreckage apparently has something to offer, as they send a little workbee off to do something in it.



Showrunners Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts spoke to Indie Wire about many aspects of the series, including hinting at things to come. Berg acknowledged

the war will continue in Chapter 2. It’ll be in there for sure. The Klingon war is this crisis where Burnham was there when it set off and she feels responsible for setting off. That is her arc for Season 1, and that is what will be paying off by the end of the season.

But Harberts had more to add:

...the war is always alive and always a motivator, but we also really wanted to try to tell some stories that stop down from the war. And I think that Chapter 2 will open in a place where as much as the war is weighing on our characters’ minds, they’ve got a bigger problem to solve.

Doomsday Machine (CGI) Special Effects.

Star Trek's "Doomsday Machine" has everything. A crazy commodore out for revenge, a hungry planet killer on the rampage posing a definite threat to the USS Enterprise NCC 1701 not to mention action packed, nail biting drama and a mystery to be solved. What happened to the USS Constellation NCC 1017?  Enhanced with Computer Generated Images the "Planet Doomsday Weapon" is the main star attraction of this episode thrilling fans with fierce antiproton attacks on two federation starships.

The reason becomes clear. Decker and Kirk interfere with its heavy appetite for nearby planets, inhabitants included! Judge for yourself the C.G.I. effects taking place within the timeline of the Enterprise crew and the Constellation. For you pleaure I've included new and old Star Trek screenshots!

These images have been remastered with wizard special effects. Its obvious the USS Constellation has taken one hell of a beating.

CGI effects radiate detailed damage on Matt Decker's starship Constellation from the mysterious, scary doomsday machine. The hull is completely exposed to the cold atmospheric conditions of outer- space. Spacerguy has uncovered that trekkie reactions are mixed.

Some people love the whole idea while others don't. One guy thought the Constellation looked awesome but the planet killer looked cartoonish. Trekkers just don't know yet. Its a wait and see. Star Trek.com has remastered images of "The Doomsday Machine" and its obvious CBS have been working hard to give this their best. I'm really excited about this. Don't count on streaking stars, bubble shields, or different fly-by shots though.

Star trek's "Doomsday Machine" is a great all time favourite because Commodore Matt Decker just wouldn't give up his vendetta on the space monster that devoured countless planets and also turned his ship into a useless hulk. The gigantic doomsday weapon has a hull of solid neutronium resistant to phaser attack.

Photons were useless also. Deckers transporters were knocked out. It left his Constitution class starship U.S.S. Constellation NCC-1017 crippled while it consumed Matt's crew on the third planet. Decker of course wouldn't admit to defeat. Once aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise he relieved Spock from command and began his crazed attack on the hungry space killer all over again!

Trektoday Doomsday Article

The Commodore is held in the Doomsday Monster's spell. Deckers guilt over the loss of his crew has nearly driven him over the edge. He can still hear them screaming for help in his head. So he sets a counter attack point blank range. Kirk's Enterprise gets nearer and nearer to the maw of the spooky space demon. Phasers Fire!! Fire!! Fire!!! Spock warns Matt Decker that the Enterprise cannot hold out for much longer...

Humans mattered little to the planet killer. The annilation of planets in the L-374 system is evidence of that. The machine was some kind of weapon miles long used in an ancient war between two warring planets now long extinct.

The Constellation found it slicing up a planet for an afternoon snack. There was no stopping it.

Spock's Enterprise analysis of the Constellation's captain logs detail what happened during Decker's battles clearly illustrating that "Doomsday" is some kind of interstellar robot which came from outside the Galaxy. It took a battle of wits, bravery, sacrafice, hardwork, and expertise not to mention one hellulva cosmic explosion to shortcircuit this beastie. Enjoy.

Starship U.S.S. Enterprise 1701 Creators

Gene Roddenberry is worshipped thoughout the Trek Universe because he's the Star Trek Creator. During Gene's era faithful trekkers beamed in to conventions from all over the universe to see him. Happy trekkers shared the space time continuum with an imaginative, friendly sci fi mind, who assimulated Edgar Rice Burroughs's Mars novels and Science Fiction in the Astounding Stories magazine growing up. Gene was also motivated by Arthur C. Clarke's Profiles of the Future which examines "space drives, warped space, and instantaneous transportation."



In a letter to Issac Asimov, Gene revealed to his lifelong friend that Star Trek came very near to breaking his health. "Its so much my baby that I couldn't confine myself to ten or twelve hour work days" which led to "me often working through several nights in a row without ever going home to sleep."

Gene's passion made him sacrifice his life for Star Trek. The next time you see Kirk or Worf beating the spuds out of some bad alien guy, think of the poor writer who spent hours composing the sci fi story. It doesn't always follow that just because writers get paid for writing a great submission that all their ideas will be used, indeed sometimes they're rewritten!

On an upbeat note, speaking for trekkers and sci fi fans, we get really excited when watching star trek because its our baby too! Starfleets starships explore the infinite reaches of space on tv every day. Earth is being assimulated with trekkiedom spreading everywhere across earth. The dream became a reality in 1966 and spread throughout the stars with six awesome Trek shows TOS, TNG, VOY, DS9, Enterprise and the animated show. Thats over six hundred episodes!!!

Don't forget the ten feature films with star trek XI in the pipeline for early 2009. Heres a Sci-Fi mystery, who's the second star trek creator? or perhaps I should say starship creator? I haven't overlooked the fact that the starship U.S.S. Enterprise was Gene Roddenberry's idea but in order for the show to reach for the stars and the fans, it needed a flash powerful starship. The Enterprise Creator isn't widely publicized but Spacerguy has uncovered that the U.S.S. Enterprise 1701 was designed by Walter "Matt" Jeffries. One of earths genuine trekkie talents. Cosmic Phenomenon in Space

C is for Cosmic Phenomenon but where is great space is it? Star Trek's starships USS Enterprise NCC 1701- A B C D and E have all encountered new worlds, civilizations during galactic voyages throughout the universe so think about it. Science has revealed space as mostly an empty void, with stars and planets making up little of its mass. Theres a lot more than matter and energy out there so say the experts but.... God is out there. As humanity reaches for the stars extraordinary interstellar phenomena like supernovas and comets paled in comparison to some of the cosmic anomalies in the mysterious realm of deep space but everyone wants to know.... 

 What do you say to God when you find Him with a starship?

 

Scotty's Deep Space K-7 Shoreleave

Inside Star Trek's Deep Space Station K-7 bar a fight breaks out between weary Klingon Warriors and Starfleet Officers from the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701.

 It seems everyone is on shore-leave recharging with a variety of drinks while Trader Cyrano Jones and Bartender - Guy Ramon watch all hell break loose from the side lines.

Scotty is having a scotch whisky. Unfortunately for the Klingons, K-7's bar doesn't supply raktajino which is Klingon coffee. A drunken Klingon staggers over to Chief Engineers Montgomery Scott's and Ensign Pavel Chekov's table uninvited.

Trouble with Tribbles.



Lets be candid. Captain James T. Kirk's reputation suffers from shipwreck, given the vicious backlash from drunken warriors who compare him to a Regulan Blood Worm, an overbearing Tin Plated Dictator with delusions of Godhood and yeah..... a Denibian Slime Devil. The unwelcome goads don't seem to be having an effect on Mr Scott. So does Mr Scott react? Absolutely not. He keeps his cool...

Chekov wanted to fight to defend the captain. Scotty ordered him to stand down. Until the Klingon touched a raw nerve and slagged off Scotts pride and joy, the USS Enterprise 1701...comparing her to a sagging rust bucket designed like a garbage scow. Mr Scott was not a happy man.

The Voyage Home

The year was 2285. Out of the vast darkness of space, a mysterious probe appears in earths orbit. Its high pitched distressing communications, interfere severely with the planets environment and all surrounding power sources, including starships. Earthlings are powerless and panic is rife. All of Starfleet is on red alert. The probe is the bad guy and wants to find out why his friendly humpback whales are no longer answering. Little does it know humans have murdered them to extinction.

Star Trek IV, The Voyage Home is a supreme space adventure concerning an extremely powerful alien probe, Time travel, late 20th century paranoid earthlings, Captain Kirk's heroic crew of explorers, a Klingon ship and the small matter of saving earth with George and Gracie. Packed with wit, mischief, neat special effects, a funny Spock and great storyline, the Voyage Home is one of my favourite Star Trek movies. Star Trek IV is epic in nature and spirit and has all the ingredients of a great sci fi movie.

After three months of exile on Vulcan, Kirk decides to return to Earth with his loyal, gallant Enterprise crew mates, in a Klingon B'rel-class, Bird of Prey to face charges of theft, damage and saving Mr Spock's life.

The odds of returning in one piece in the enemy's shabby Klingon ship, did little to inspire Dr Mc Coys confidence. He named their new ship "HMS Bounty" courtesy of the Klingon Empire and Lord Kruge of course, who got snuffed out by Kirk on the Genesis planet. Yessss! The crew voted in favor of going back to Earth and facing federation justice for their "crimes." So much for being the good guys.

Kruge's stolen D-12 Scout rattled and groaned as the crew approached warp speed. I remember this had me on the edge of my seat, rooting for my heroes as I prepared myself for our warp 10 around the sun. I felt like part of the crew. This was an exhilarating moment for me and my eyes never left the screen. When the "Bounty"crew did arrive at earth it seemed so realistic. When I was a young Trekkie, I recall looking out the Klingon viewer on TV and seeing earth. Kirk's crew had arrived secretly. Wow I said, "This is whats its like in space."

Spock asks Kirk about the use of language which has altered since their arrival. "It is currently laced with colourful metaphors."Double dumb ass on you" and so forth " enquires Spock innocently.

"You mean the profanity, that's simply the way the way they talk here. Nobody pays any attention to you if you don't swear every other word. You'll find it in all the literature of the period." replies Kirk.

Spock: For example?

Kirk: Oh the complete works of Jacqueline Susann, the novels of Harrold Robbins....

Spock: Ah.... The Giants....


It was the ships chronic condition, whining dilithium crystals, destabilising hull, warping around the sun, the chase around the hospital, and Chekov's capture by earthlings that really got me amped. I realised anyone of these could put "the mission" in serious jeopardy. McCoys dialogue with the hospital surgeon is hilarious, Spock gets to grips after coming back from the dead with amusing "best guesses" for his usually precise time computations. Stay clued for Spock's profanity on the planet. Star Trek IV really is a pleasure to watch. The cursing bit is just so not Spock but Spock despite Captain Kirks vain attempts just can't remember.

KIRK: Spock.....
SPOCK: Yes?

KIRK: About those colorful metaphors we discussed. I don't think you should try to use them.
SPOCK: Why not?
KIRK :Well, for one thing, you haven't quite got the hang of it.
SPOCK: I see.
KIRK :And another thing... It is not always necessary to tell the truth.
SPOCK :I cannot tell a lie.
KIRK :You don't have to lie... You could exaggerate.
SPOCK :Exaggerate.
KIRK :You've done it before. Can't you remember?
SPOCK :The hell I can't
KIRK :(Sighs) What else did you learn from your mind meld?
SPOCK: They are very unhappy about the way their species has been treated by man.
KIRK :They have a right to be... Do you think they'll help us?
SPOCK I believe I was successful in communicating our intentions.

The real stars of the movie "George and Gracie" were two Humpbacked whales. They respond to the mystery space caller, after Kirk warps 300 years into the past and beams them away from their 1986 hostile environment. 23rd century earth of the future filled with Starfleet hopefuls is saved. Yes! It worked. Earth was saved. lets not forget however that the plight of 21st century whales is a real one which the movie clearly demonstrates.
Here's some amusing dialogue between an extremely worried Dr "Bones" McCoy as he demands of kirk,

" Are you sure this is such s bright idea?"
"What do you mean?" answers Kirk calmly.
"I mean him, back at his post like nothing happened. I don't know if you've got the whole picture but Spock's not exactly working on all thrusters!!" retorts a worked up McCoy

"It'll come back to him" reassures Kirk with doubt written all over his face.
"Are you sure?" presses McCoy
Kirks looking lost now.
"Thats what i thought." An anguished McCoy leaves Kirks side.
"Mr Sulu, take us home." commands Kirk.

Kirk seemed to take Mc Coys antics in his stride. Its a pity McCoy didn't prescribe himself some of his own medicine! A hypospray or two is good for you! Doc! It would have done wonders for his stress levels. Uhuru which means freedom in Swahili was at her communications station.

Sulu was at the helm and Chekov was at the weapons station. The plan was to warp the Bounty around the sun accounting for time computation, warp capability acceleration and decelerating the ship mass, etc and of course most important of all,

" making the best guess that I can." said Spock earnestly to Dr McCoy at a critical moment.
Scotty held the ship together in the engine room with the re-energized Klingon crystals. One of his funniest lines in the movie is when he informed Kirk,

" Admiral I have replaced the Klingon food packs, they were giving me a sour stomach!"
" O, Is that what it was?" Clearly Kirk discovered something only he didn't care for the details.

One solar flare colliding with the Bounty could have sent them off course but the ship survived. The slingshot around the sun succeeded saving the whales from Earth of the past in time to save 23rd century mankind from a destructive interstellar space probe.. The HMS Bounty and the Enterprise crew sweep down on Planet Earth just in time to release the whales. The message in the movie is these endangered humpback whales belong on our world just as much as humans. Its is because of our activities there is only one third of Humpbacks roaming the Seven Seas so we've got to stop the slaughter and pollution of our oceans. The Voyage Home has been hailed as one of Star Trek's popular and successful movies and I highly recommend watching this movie.

Majel Barrett Roddenberry

Majel Barret Roddenberry died peacefully in her Bel Air home on December 18th 2008. Her roles in Star Trek introduced a confident "Number One" character in the pilot episode "The Cage" which was reinvented as the lovely Nurse Christine Chapel with a soft spot for Mr Spock later on.

In fact during an early scene in Star Trek: The Motion Picture, viewers are informed that she has now become Doctor Chapel, a role which she reprised briefly in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.

She provided the regular voice of onboard computers in several Federation starships for Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, and most of the Star Trek movies.


Majel was famous as the ships computer voice which she supplied for Federation starships but particularly the USS Enterprise 1701, living long and prospering in the reboot version of Star Trek 2009 movie.  J.J. Abrams film is dedicated to her as well as Gene.

She starred in most of the Star Trek movies and appeared in three Star Trek series.  ("Star Trek" (1966), "Star Trek - The Next Generation" (1987), "Star Trek - Deep Space Nine" (1993) playing the Betazoid Ambassodor Lwaxana Troi on Star Trek, The Next Generation including Deep Space Nine and was brilliant

Majel also made a point of attending a major Star Trek convention each year in an effort to inspire fans and keep the franchise alive. I will miss her and our journeys through the galaxy together. May she find eternal happiness with her husband Gene beyond the final frontier, going boldly where none of us have ever, gone before.

Classic TOS Starships

Here is a Classic list of Star Trek's TOS Starship's that have rocked us to the edge of our seats in awe and wonder. The Enterprise crew have been our guides, our protectors and our friends on our adventures through the vast unknown. Starfleets mission in the Galaxy has always been one primarily concerned with Deep Space exploration, Peace, Scientific research, diplomatically seeking out new life forms and defending the United Federation of Planets. In 2161 Starfleet was chartered by the Federation going boldly where no-man or no-one has gone before.

In Star Trek The Original Series, its fleet of starships have been met with armed conflict, doomsday machines, madmen, interstellar mayhem, mysticism, encounters with alien life forms and firefights to the death. Enforcing the peace in the far flung reaches of the universe often comes at a high-human cost. Starfleet's family of officers and crew hands are a close knit community who rely on each other especially in times of crisis. When a crew member has fallen honourably during battle defending the constitution of the United Federation of Planets its a challenge to continue but we must serve, protect and be ready to die at our posts like true Klingons.


In 2254, James Kirk and Ben Finney served aboard the U.S.S. Republic NCC-1371 while Ensign Kirk was a cadet at the Academy. Kirk discovers an open circuit to the atomic matter piles and logs the error which sends Ben Finney to the bottom of the promotion list. Finney plots his revenge which temporarily jeopardizes Captain Kirk's career on stardate 2947.3.

In 2257, the U.S.S. Farragut NCC-1647 is commanded by Captain Garrovick with Lieutenant James T.Kirk on his first assignment since leaving Starfleet Academy. Unfortunately the Farragut falls victim to a Dikironium Cloud Creature discovered on Tycho IV which descends on the crew. The vampire cloud creature is merciless and feeds off the haemoglobin iron in 200 Starfleet officers rendering them totally lifeless within seconds. Kirk never forgets and is determined to capture the creature before it returns to space and finds another planet of humans to feed on.

In 2267, Commodore Matt Decker's entire crew of the U.S.S. Constellation NCC-1017 are consumed by the planet killer in "The Doomsday Machine" episode while on a planet. Meanwhile a horrified commodore survives the fatal attack on his ship but wished he had gone down with his crew. The Captain is always the last man to leave a starship in crisis. Decker vows to avenge his crew mates and gets his chance.

In 2268, the U.S.S. Exeter NCC-1672 captained by Ronald Tracey is found orbiting planet Omega IV in "The Omega Glory." Its entire crew is reduced to dehydrated crystals by an ancient bacterialogical warfare virus. The Exeter crew led by Tracey accidentally contract the Omega IV disease and beam it up to the ship. Tracey soon realises Omega IV holds the key for natural immunity against the killer virus with the secret to extended life beckoning him to the planet surface below. The Exeter captain violates Starfleet's Prime directive which Kirk and Spock must somehow repair before its too late.

In 2268 the USS Excalibur NCC-1664 commanded by Captain Harris is destroyed by Dr Richard Daystrom's maniac multitronic computer. M-5 fires full phasers during a friendly war game involving five starships, killing the entire crew of the starship Excalibur in "the Ultimate Computer." The U.S.S. Potemkin NCC-1657 and the U.S.S. Hood NCC-1703 make lucky escapes. The U.S.S. Lexington NCC-1709, commanded by Commodore Robert Wesley is severely damaged with M-5 killing 53 crew hands on that ship. M-5's logic is flawed and like its creator the computer was prone to emotionally erratic behaviour which affected the battle strategy of its decisions. M-5 soon realised the error of its way and felt the urgent need to atone for its sins.

In 2268, the U.S.S. Intrepid NCC-1631 manned by vulcans, encounters a massive single celled space borne amoeba near the Gamma 7A System in "The Immunity Syndrome." This interstellar creature is 18,000 kilometers long and 3,000 kilometers wide surrounded by a large energy field which is big! The creature's energy "zone of darkness"
nearly cripples the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 on its approach solving the mystery about how the crew of the U.S.S. Intrepid were destroyed.

In 2268, the U.S.S. Yorktown NCC-1717 was scheduled to rendezvous with the U.S.S. Enterprise to transfer critical vaccine supplies for planet Theta VII. The rendezvous was temporarily cancelled in favour of hunting down the Vampire Cloud Creature before it escaped without a trace.

In 2269 the U.S.S. Defiant NCC-1764 disappeared into an alien Tholian interdimensional trap which was designed to capture enemy starships in the "Tholian Web" before finally crushing them.

Top 100 Sci-Fi Movies?

This week I found Seaturtles video with a cool slideshow of 100 sci fi movie "classics" originating from 1927 to 2009. Many of these 100 Science Fiction movies have robots, cyborgs and alien entities sparking our sense of wonder by taking us to the edge of the universe. Fantasy epics and Space Operas like Avatar and Star Wars are well known. So sit back and enjoy the sci fi slideshow.



In general, science fiction films feature great story plot elements, striking artwork and epic character interplay from a scientific viewpoint rather than a supernatural one. "Ancient astronauts museum" sums these classics up very nicely... Wrath of Khan is battling it out at number 70 along with four other Star Trek movies. Star Wars (1977) is sitting pretty at no 5. A couple of black and whites like Metropolis and H G Wells' "Things To Come" are featured but why Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind made no 57 is a mystery.

How does your geek feel about the sequencing of these classic sci fi movies? Watching the video is certainly a good way of testing your sci-fi movie knowledge in a showdown with some friends. So let the battle of wits begin.

I enjoy looking at Tobias Richter's Star Trek wallpapers from "Light Works." The galaxies greatest starships have been transformed into hyper comic 3d visuals bursting with creative imagination. I just wish I could be there! These Star Trek starships are an amazing feat of engineering in high resolution wallpapers. You've done Scotty proud, Tobias. Sciencefictionstuff put me wise to these stunning Federation battle cruisers seeking out new life forms and commanding a peaceful military presence along the Federation Neutral Zone. Federation Officers do look mighty fine in their Starfleet uniforms aboard their spaceships, but the word peace just doesn't sit well with the Klingons and Romulans..... or does it?

Captain Kathryn Janeway: Oh, you're wrong Tuvoc. It's much more than that. This ship has been our home. It's kept us together. It's been part of our family. As illogical as this might sound, I feel as close to Voyager as I do to any other member of my crew. It's carried us, Tuvok - even nurtured us. And right now, it needs one of us.

Lenara Kahn Deep Space Nine

L is for Lenara's Logical Love but who is she? Lenara Kahn became totally acquainted with Jadzia Dax when she "Rejoined" with her former host aboard Star Trek's Deep Space Nine. These two beauties made out! Believe it, LOL.

The reunion made a very distinct impression. While controversial theres a perfectly logical reason why this happened. Want to know more? Of course you do. Star Trek Fans love Terry Farrell at Star Conventions whose "Trill" beauty spots are a great topic for conversation. How many do you think there are?

Lenara and Dax Kiss!

The real real dark horse is Susanna Thompson who plays the trill Dr Lenara Kahn. Born on the 27th January 1958, Susanna is a women for all seasons playing four characters in the Star Trek's universe. Most Notably the Borg Queen in Star Trek Voyager’s “Unimatrix Zero," Part I and II starring also in Voyagers “Dark Frontier."

Thompson plays “Lenara Kahn” in DS9: “Rejoined”, the inmate “Jaya” in The Next Generation’s episode “Frame of Mind” and the Romulan “Varel” in “The Next Phase” (TNG).

"....it was nice that Avery (Brooks directed) brought us in to meet each other. And I feel like I'm a pretty comfortable person and she certainly was, and Avery wanted us to have that contact. She was great to work with. I just loved it."

All erotic Trill gossiping aside, Lenara was a dedicated scientist and her communications experiments on the wormhole would eventually become a great asset to the Federation's defenses during the Dominion War. This is one DS9 episode, trekkers you won't want to miss.

 Hi Trekkers,Spacerguy here. We know the feel good factor of saurian brandy, right? Its Christmas, that lack of good judgement, just one more merry sherry hit before stopping by the second star to the left...  Well my friends, In Star Trek TNG "the Naked Now" Science ship Tsiolkovsky investigating a nearby collapsing star has fallen victim to its own self destructive wild passionate behaviour! All is not what it seems in trekiverse.

The crew are getting so loaded with "cheer" and intoxication that one crew says " yeah do it" and out blasts the airlock into outer space along with all the bridge crew. Sure it was a blast, a pure dopamine rush comparable to getting high on alcohol but....The question is how?

When Starfleets USS Enterprise NCC 1701-D finest arrive to investigate strange activity on the science starship with the supernova of a giant star nearby. It really is touch and go when a PSI 2000 variant virus infects the USS Enterprise NCC 1701-D.  So can things get any worse? Yes they can! Someone has yanked out all the computer chips paralysing the starship! Mr Data who replaced all the computer microchips at lightspeed with nano-seconds to spare and Mr Shimota gets kia.

I hear you trekkers! Wesley drunk on the PSI 2000 virus. Whats even more puzzling is the deus ex machina (God out of the machine) device that saves the USS Enterprise NCC 1701-D sat the last minute. "The Naked Now" is a homage to "The Naked Time". This entire episode depends on Dr Crushers son Science Project (which resembles a toy) Its got a built in tractor beam which diverts the science ship and acts as a push off for the Enterprise-D which vacates the flightpath of the celestial object in space hurtling towards them.

Dr Beverly and Picard entertain ideas but the Enterprise-D must come first.

The crew are getting wasted, lol. The big question is who is in charge of the USS Enterprise NCC 1701-D while Crusher is running amok in Main engineering which isn't yet Geordi Laforges Warp Core.  Several good comedy pieces to laugh at including Beverly and Picard's craving passions over each other. Strictly professional after all the Enterprise-D relies only on Starfleet's best!
